What’s the latest on the team?

Republic FC (13-12-6, 45 pts) picked up a priceless point on Wednesday night following a dramatic come-from-behind 2-2 draw against LA Galaxy II at Papa Murphy’s Park. 

Forward Thomas Enevoldsen fired the hosts ahead in the 20th minute with a picturesque curling effort into the top far corner of the net. The goal was the Danish strikers seventh goal in nine games since joining the Indomitable Club in August from Indy Eleven. Los Dos managed to level the score through Ethan Zubak before the break and took their first lead of the match in the 72nd minute after a misfired shot happened to roll to a wide open Mohammed Kamara who kept his composure and netted an easy close-range attempt. But Simon Elliott’s men continued pushing forward and found their equalizer late in the 89th minute when Matt Mahoney guided a Mitchell Taintor header past the LA goalkeeper to complete the comeback and steal a point from Los Dos. 

Despite surrendering two goals to LA, Republic FC still boasts the third-best defense in the Western Conference with only 36 goals against during league play. In games that immediately followed a match where SRFC allowed two goals or more, the team has responded well and posts a 5-3-3 record on the year in all competitions. 

The result leaves the boys in Old Glory Red in sixth place with 45 points from 31 matches. If Sacramento can win out, the fourth and final playoff-hosting seed isn’t a guarantee but it’s still very much a possibility. Republic FC sits behind Austin Bold FC (5th, 46 pts) and Real Monarchs (4th, 46 pts) but has an away match on the final day against Monarchs that could ultimately determine the last remaining first-round home playoff game honor. 

What about the other guys?

Tulsa Roughnecks FC (7-14-10, 31 pts) have endured something of a campaign to forget but at least the team can hold their hats on their recent run of success. After suffering through 18 straight games without a win, a run that lasted from late-April until late-August, the club from the Sooner State has been victorious in three of their last six games (3-1-2). 

The thorn in Tulsa’s side all season has been their defense, even at home. Roughnecks FC have surrendered the second-most goals in the Western Conference with 62 and since June 1, in five of their last nine home matches, Tulsa has allowed at least two goals or more (1-4-0) to the opposition. The Oklahoman club also has conceded the third-most fouls in the entire USL with 467.

While the defense has been a mess for most of the season, the Tulsa offense has been the lone bright spot at times. In their last home game, Roughnecks FC roughed up San Antonio FC 4-3 with an 87th minute Fredlin Mompremier strike sealing all three points for the hosts last Wednesday night. Anchoring the attack is Rodrigo da Costa whose team-leading 11 assists is the second-most in the USL and he also leads the team in goals with nine. The Brazilian playmaker’s 67 scoring chances created is currently third-most in the Western Conference. Through 30 matches, Simon Elliott’s men are in seventh-place in the Western Conference but if his side can manage to win out, Sacramento will claim at least fourth-place and host a postseason match come late-October. Republic FC currently have a game in hand on Austin Bold (5th, 46 pts) and have upcoming matches against Orange County (6th, 45 pts) and Real Monarchs (4th, 46 pts). 

After weather delays caused by torrential rain and hail, the boys in Old Glory Red took the early lead in the 14th minute through Thomas Enevoldsen. Forward Stefano Bonomo headed across goal a Jaime Villarreal cross that defender Matt Mahoney nodded just enough on target that the Danish striker was able to finish from close range. The goal was Enevoldsen sixth in eight matches with the Indomitable Club. 

Locomotive FC equalized early in the second half through Bryam Rebellon before Josue Gomez gave the visitors the lead in extra time. 

Saturday’s result came as a surprise given the hosts had a handful of solid scoring chances and outshot El Paso 19 to 10. With the game still tied 1-1, SRFC’s best second half chances to take the lead came when Keven Aleman struck the post in the 57th minute and Cameron Iwasa crushed the crossbar ten minutes later.

What about the other guys?

LA Galaxy II (11-9-10, 43 pts) have surged into playoff contention after a slow start to the season. Since Junior Gonzalez took over as head coach in July, his side are 5-3-2 and 3-1-1 over their last five matches. Through 30 games, Los Dos are in eighth-place in the Western Conference and if the season ended today, the Southern California club would host a play-in playoff game. 

In their most recent match, LA blew by OKC Energy FC 5-1 after trailing 1-0 to open the contest. Prior to the demolition of OKC, Los Dos were typically the first team to find the scoresheet and had struck first in four of their previous five matches. After an early goal from the visitors, Sam Werner netted the equalizer in the 18th minute after Charalampos Chantzopoulos intercepted an errant pass and quickly fired the ball upfield towards Thomas Enevoldsen. The Danish striker, with the slightest of touches, simply nudged the ball towards Werner in space who opened his hips and powered a right-footed shot just inside the far post. The boys in Old Glory Red doubled their lead in the 81st minute when Keven Aleman, after picking off a poor clearance from the RGVFC goalkeeper, found Dariusz Formella at the far side of the box who drilled a left-footed shot into the back of the net for his second game-winning goal in as many matches. Not only did SRFC out possess Toros on the afternoon 59% to 41%, but the hosts finished with a 84.3% passing accuracy, their best this season in league play.

The struggles are mostly tied to the offense that currently ranks dead last in the entire USL in total shots taken with 294. The club from the Sooner State also boasts the lowest passing accuracy in the Western Conference with 74%. 

Not all aspects of the OKC offense are in dire straights given an 18% goal conversion rate is fifth-best in the conference. Forward Deshorn Brown’s 13 goals currently leads the team and ties him for eighth-best in the league. He’s also 10th in the Western Conference with 53 shots taken. Fellow striker Owayne Omar Gordon has registered a team-high seven assists on the season which ranks him seventh in all of the USL. 

Energy FC’s greatest strength is likely their reliable veteran goalkeeper Cody Laurendi who leads the entire league in saves with 91. Laurendi has five clean sheets to his name on the season which ranks him fifth in the conference.

Republic FC (11-11-4, 37 pts) climbed the Western Conference standings up to seventh place and remained unbeaten at home in the all-time series against Tacoma Defiance (8-0-0) after shutting out the Pacific Northwest club, 3-0, at Papa Murphy’s Park on Saturday night. 

Simon Elliott’s men took the early advantage in the 13th minute when Jordan McCrary picked out an open Thomas Enevoldsen directly in front of goal and the newly-acquired strikercalmly directed his close-range shot past the Tacoma goalkeeper. The assist was McCrary’s first of the season and first with the club. The hosts doubled their lead just before halftime when Enevoldsen played a perfect pass to Cameron Iwasa, who with his first touch at the top of the box, rifled a shot into the far corner of goal for the 2-0 lead. The goal was Iwasa’s team-high 13th of the season, elevating Sacramento’s all-time leading goal scorer up to a tie for sixth place in all of the USL Championship. Enevoldsen added the finishing touches in the 75th minute when Jaime Villarreal found Iwasa with a well-weighted through ball that the Sacramento native selflessly shared with an undefended Enevoldsen. Austin Bold FC (11-9-7, 40 pts) came from behind over the weekend to draw 1-1 on the road with Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC. After falling behind in the first half, Gustavo Martini Rissi netted the equalizer in the 70th minute to return to Texas with a point in the standings and a firm hold on fourth place in the Western Conference. 

Austin has been hit or miss on the road this season but at home, the expansion side is a tough team to beat. In 14 home matches, Austin has only lost twice and the Texan club has scored eight goals over the last two matches (both wins). Spearheading the attack is forward Andre Lima who leads the team in goals with 10 and his 57 shots this season is currently tied for sixth in the conference. What’s the latest on the team?

Republic FC (9-9-3, 30 pts) rediscovered their winning form over the weekend with a first-ever win in San Antonio. The boys in Old Glory Red took a commanding 3-0 lead in the first half before the hosts crept back with two second half scores, but they ultimately held on for a crucial 3-2 road win. 

Stefano Bonomo, whose Saturday evening efforts against San Antonio FC earned him his second USL Team of the Week honors of the season, opened the scoring in the 21st minute after heading home a Sam Werner corner at the far post. Cameron Iwasa lifted his goal tally on the year up to 10 in the 33rd minute when the Sacramento-native connected on a Drew Skundrich cross and powered a header past the San Antonio goalkeeper. It was the second consecutive season he’s hit double digits and the third time he’s done so during his SRFC career. On the cusp of halftime, Bonomo bagged his second brace of the season when the former New York Red Bulls forward tapped in a perfectly placed Juan Barahona cross. 

Three goals against the Texan club secured all three points and elevated Republic FC firmly back into the playoff picture with 30 points from 21 matches and into seventh place in the Western Conference based on a superior goal differential. 

What about the other guys?

Las Vegas Lights FC (7-9-5, 26 pts) are a tough team to beat at home, but on the road is a completely different story. The Nevadan side have just a single win away from home all season and have lost their last two straight road matches. Out of 10 away games this year, Lights FC experienced defeat in eight and have been outscored 26-8, the most recent being a 2-1 loss on Saturday night to Fresno FC where a red card forced Las Vegas to play the entire second half a man down.  

Despite finding limited success away from Cashman Field this season, Vegas does do a decent job of creating offensive opportunities. Lights FC are fourth in the Western Conference with 316 shots and leading the charge is forward Irvin Parra. His 61 shots are second-best in the entire USL and the Sin City striker currently leads his side in goals (10) and assists (4). Parra has recorded all his scores from inside the box, but his chances may be few and far between against a Republic FC defense that’s currently fourth-best in the Western Conference. 

Fans may recognize a few familiar faces including Lights FC’s head coach Eric Wynalda, a former U.S. Men’s National Team player and FS1 soccer analyst, currently in his first season at the helm. One of Wynalda’s attacking options to call on is former Republic FC striker, Sammy Ochoa, who during his singular season with Sacramento in 2017 led the team in both goals and assists. Goalkeeper Thomas Olsen, who has started every league match for Sin City this season and is tied for third in the Western Conference with seven clean sheets, also spent time in the California capital during a brief loan spell with Republic FC at the end of last season.

What’s the latest on the team?

Republic FC (9-9-3, 30 pts) rediscovered their winning form over the weekend with a first-ever win in San Antonio. The boys in Old Glory Red took a commanding 3-0 lead in the first half before the hosts crept back with two second half scores, but they ultimately held on for a crucial 3-2 road win. 

Stefano Bonomo, whose Saturday evening efforts against San Antonio FC earned him his second USL Team of the Week honors of the season, opened the scoring in the 21st minute after heading home a Sam Werner corner at the far post. Cameron Iwasa lifted his goal tally on the year up to 10 in the 33rd minute when the Sacramento-native connected on a Drew Skundrich cross and powered a header past the San Antonio goalkeeper. It was the second consecutive season he’s hit double digits and the third time he’s done so during his SRFC career. On the cusp of halftime, Bonomo bagged his second brace of the season when the former New York Red Bulls forward tapped in a perfectly placed Juan Barahona cross. 

Three goals against the Texan club secured all three points and elevated Republic FC firmly back into the playoff picture with 30 points from 21 matches and into seventh place in the Western Conference based on a superior goal differential. 

What about the other guys?

Las Vegas Lights FC (7-9-5, 26 pts) are a tough team to beat at home, but on the road is a completely different story. The Nevadan side have just a single win away from home all season and have lost their last two straight road matches. Out of 10 away games this year, Lights FC experienced defeat in eight and have been outscored 26-8, the most recent being a 2-1 loss on Saturday night to Fresno FC where a red card forced Las Vegas to play the entire second half a man down.  

Despite finding limited success away from Cashman Field this season, Vegas does do a decent job of creating offensive opportunities. Lights FC are fourth in the Western Conference with 316 shots and leading the charge is forward Irvin Parra. His 61 shots are second-best in the entire USL and the Sin City striker currently leads his side in goals (10) and assists (4). Parra has recorded all his scores from inside the box, but his chances may be few and far between against a Republic FC defense that’s currently fourth-best in the Western Conference. 

Fans may recognize a few familiar faces including Lights FC’s head coach Eric Wynalda, a former U.S. Men’s National Team player and FS1 soccer analyst, currently in his first season at the helm. One of Wynalda’s attacking options to call on is former Republic FC striker, Sammy Ochoa, who during his singular season with Sacramento in 2017 led the team in both goals and assists. Goalkeeper Thomas Olsen, who has started every league match for Sin City this season and is tied for third in the Western Conference with seven clean sheets, also spent time in the California capital during a brief loan spell with Republic FC at the end of last season.

Despite 13 corner kick chances and a golden opportunity from the penalty spot for Simon Elliott’s men, Reno‘s defense held off the Republic FC attack to ultimately secure all three points. 

One positive characteristic about Republic FC’s squad this season has been the teams’ resilient mental strength and their ability to put a loss behind them and immediately focus on the next match. Bouncing back following a loss this season has been a common theme for SRFC. In 2019, the Indomitable Club post a 4-0-1 (W-L-D) record in all competitions in the match immediately after having tasted defeat. Most recently, the team blanked El Paso Locomotive at home, 3-0, with all three goals finding the back of the net in the final half hour of action.

Hot on his tail is former Wolverhampton and Blackburn striker Jemal Johnson with six this season.
