joyangelor07: With all the new players we have on the team, that came in with experience. How can we have them better adapt to the new atmosphere in the playing field?
Buckle: The trip to Mexico was big for us in team bonding. Allowing the players to get to know each other and bond. There was a fair bit of change and we had to replace players and Mexico and training helps to get the players to know each other. The friendlies at Bonney were good for us, they were a little early, but we performed well and gave the new players a chance to get to feel Bonney Field. I think there was a good transition, especially in the back with Christian, Newton and Foran all playing with each other for the first time.
sonticus: Would you rather fight 1 bear-sized quail or 100 quail-sized bears?
Buckle: I would rather fight 100 quail-sized bears.
nate_neymar: Opinions on the academy and their progress?
Smith: I couldn’t be more pleased.
Buckle: I would concur with that. It’s something that was very bold when we’ve started it. And there’s a lot more room for growth, but we’ve done an excellent job in such a short amount of time to get it off the ground and get players involved with training with the first team and national call-ups.
8688chris: How do you think Cameron Iwasa is doing right now?
Buckle: I think this is his best run especially in becoming a first team regular. He worked very hard in the preseason. He’s fast becoming a really important player for us now. I think again, you look at his play he’s becoming more comfortable as a regular. I really believe in Cameron Iwasa, he’s someone we’ve stood by and nurtured. And that’s what we want to do. Of course we need our veterans too, but we want the likes of Iwasa coming in. We just need really get those goals in and we’ll have a top player in our hands.
7_is_enough: Coach Buckle, first please know that we are behind you 100% and we are glad you are here! Clearly some important things are going right. The culture of the team is good and the control of play is often in our favor. Yet we still struggle to develop our attack through the midfield and struggle with finishing. Do you see these gaps as individual player quality issues (do we simply need better talent), as team synergy issues that can be coached through and overcome, or as some combination of both?
Buckle: I think it is a combination of both. We believe in the players we have signed. We have to give them a chance. Stats are a huge part of any sport and the stats tell us that we have a lot of the ball and create a lot of chances but we have lacked at the finishing. We are very functional at creating chances so now we have to finish them. There is an element of me having faith, but also an element of adding to the squad if we continue to not finish.
earlston: Do you think Barrera is the creative solution in the midfield and has he played well enough to keep his starting position? Keep in mind he has a rate of 1.3 shots per game and .3 shots on goal per game.
Buckle: I think Danny Barrera is def. a creative player for us. I think sometimes you can only see that creativity when that ball ends up in the back of the net, say a thru ball. Danny and our midfield have done a really good job serving the ball through this season with attempts on goal and all those numbers stacking up. He hasn’t perhaps been at his best the couple of matches, but that happens to every player once in a while. We have every faith. He’s a creator, if we could do a stat breakdown to every ball to Klimenta and the range. Perhaps it’s just been a matter of trying a little too hard for us to force the ball into the net.
on0se: What historic or current team (besides Republic!) best represents the play style you most want to emulate going forward?
Buckle: We want to be entertaining, that is the biggest thing. We want to play a brand of football where it is exciting and we create chances and keep possession of the ball. When you are going away from home we may have to change. We have a few different ways of playing. We have a possession game and a counter attack game. We want to dominate the game and be exciting. So there is not necessarily a team, but rather focus on creating our brand that we want to play.
Longdrive95: Why did Colvey get the start over Kiffe this past weekend?
Is there a policy/agreement on how the team handles incoming loan players from the Earthquakes?
Buckle: There is a policy. It is a very healthy policy that I have with Dominic Kinnear and one that has been mutually beneficial. If I take a player I can start a player, or take them in the 18, but if I take a player I am probably going to play him.
Where James Kiffe is concerned. James has played in almost every match for me and when Kip came available, a player I had in mind before the season, I thought it was a great time to give James a little rest.
pos26: Why are we doing so poorly this year?
Buckle: I don’t think that we have played “so poorly” per say, but rather have had a string of difficult games. We had one game where we went a man down, another game where an own goal separated the two teams and another where we got forward and created a bunch of chances but were unable to finish. The mark of a good team is a team that is consistent and we need to get to that place. We have a lot of new players and we are still getting used to it. We are building for now and building for the future and as a part of that we need the fans to support us as we get the team settled and ready.
manybeaucoup: There has been talk about getting folks that can score if this drought continues. Can you share details about the perspective players you plan on adding to the team?
Buckle: I think it would be wrong of me to share any information like that until it has actually happened. Like any team we always want to improve. I don’t mind saying we’ve been looking in the market. But again it has to be the right player (or players) and those aren’t always easy to come by. With the Quakes and Mark Sherrod going into surgery, we’re a little more limited on the offensive support we originally planned on so that’s shaking things up for us. We’re keeping things close as we can’t share much until it happens, but stay tuned!
Isco16: How different (in a good way) is Sacramento compared to other MLS soccer cities etc Portland, Seattle, Orlando and from a coach’s perspective what would make the Quails a top future MLS franchise?
Buckle: I can only speak from being here since July and how much the players enjoy playing for us. Sacramento is an incredible place to live and if you get the job satisfaction here as well. That’s very rare, to live in such a beautiful place and love your job, and we’re lucky to have both.
I think it’s a testament to our fans. Take last week’s match, to have our fans on their feet singing and cheering in support of their home club, even though we lost, is phenomenal.
Smith: Take a look at how we performed at just a USL compared to some of those cities from a fan engagement, attendance, and brand standpoint. I can’t wait to see how we’ll stack up against those teams and against the rest of the league. Especially when we’re a city that’s just a two-major sports league market.
