Sacramento Republic FC will launch a new youth player development initiative known as the Republic FC Developmental Program. The program is designed to compliment, and supplement, the club’s current U.S. Soccer Development Academy program in addition to SRFC Camps and Clinics presented by Raley’s.
The Republic FC Developmental Program is aimed at developing the region’s talent that is not yet old enough for Republic FC’s Academy, which will feature U-12, U-13, U-14, U-15/16 and U-17/18 sides for the 2016-2017 season.
To kick off the new initiative, Republic FC will launch with an inaugural spring session, which will run from April 29-June 17, with a mandatory tryout on Friday, April 22.
This will be the first of a series of sessions held on a quarterly basis. Additional sessions will also be held throughout the year and will be announced at a later date.

AGE GROUPS: U-8, U-9, U-10 and U-11 Boys

Each interested player must participate in the tryouts, which are free for all interested players. Approximately a dozen players will be selected in each age group to continue into the 6-week program. The free tryout is open to all competitive, serious boys soccer players ages 8-11. If a player is selected following the completion of tryouts, they will then be required to pay the $250 registration in order to participate in the six-week program.
The program offers a unique curriculum designed to enhance each player’s level of play with their own youth club, while exposing them to the development system of Republic FC’s Academy.
The inaugural spring session will include a 90 minute training session each week starting Friday, Apr. 29 through Friday, June 27 (except May 13 and 27). Republic FC look to capture their third straight win after defeating Seattle Sounders 2 and Arizona United SC in the club’s first two matches of the USL season.
Ahead of Sunday’s match, get to know Republic FC’s opponent, Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2.
Leading the charge for Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2 is Head Coach Alan Koch. Prior to joining Whitecaps FC 2, Koch worked alongside Vancouver Whitecaps’s MLS technical staff leading up to the 2015 MLS Superdraft, overseeing the club’s college scouting duties.
Koch notable experience developing young talent, spending seven years as head coach of the soccer program at his alma mater, Simon Fraser University. The South Africa native became the quickest head coach in program history to reach 100 wins and was selected as Conference Coach of the Year for six straight seasons at SFU after leading the team to NAIA or NCAA Division II Top Ten ranking every season. He finished his time at SFU with a record of 126-21-7.
Before coaching, Koch played professionally in South Africa and Germany, before ending his playing career in the League of Ireland First Division with Limerick FC.
Whitecaps FC 2 will be counting on returning defender Jackson Farmer to once again lead the backline. Farmer made 22 starts and 24 overall appearances in 2015, recording over 2,000 minutes played. The 20-year-old defender is a product of the Whitecaps FC Residency Program and made four appearances in the 2014 USL season (three starts) for then-Whitecaps FC affiliate Charleston Battery before being recalled to Vancouver.
Midfielder Victor Blasco will also be back for Whitecaps FC 2 this season. Blasco, who spent his youth at the FC Barcelona Academy, joined Whitecaps FC 2 in their inaugural season after spending one season at Vancouver Island University. The Barcelona native scored four goals and led the club in assists with six in 24 appearances in 2015. His standout performance of 2015 came on July 4, when he scored a brace in 90 seconds just after the 89th minute to lift Whitecaps FC 2 3-1 over Seattle Sounders FC 2.
On offense, Whitecaps FC 2 are led by forwards Kyle Greig and Daniel Haber, who each have score two goals apiece this season to combine for all four of the club’s total USL goals to-date.
Prior to the start of the 2016 USL season, Whitecaps FC 2 signed the youngest player in the USL , 15-year-old Alphonso Davies. After joining the Vancouver Whitecaps FC Residency Program last September, Davies was invited to the first team’s preseason training camp this year, where he played in all three matches and recorded an assist. The teenage midfielder/striker was born in Liberia but was raised in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, and has received call-ups to the Canada U-15 and U-18 teams.
Alongside Davies, Whitecaps FC 2 also signed Matthew Baldisimo. The 18-year-old defender/midfielder is also a product of the Whitecaps FC Residency program. During his four seasons at the Residency, Baldisimo made 100 appearances (88 starts) and scored nine goals. Baldisimo has also been called-up to Canada’s U-15 and U-17 team, captaining the Canadian U-17 team during the 2015 CONCACAF U-17 Championship tournament.
Rounding out the most recent transactions are defenders Sem de Wit and Elliot Green. Dutch defender de Wit signed with Whitecaps FC 2 from Dutch Eredivisie club ADO Den Haag, although he spent 2015 on loan to Eerste Divisie side Fortuna Sittard. He made 14 appearances while at Fortuna Sittard, starting in each one.
Green arrives from Swedish Division 2 side Solleftea GIF FF. A native of Lincoln, England, the 22-year-old defender made his professional debut with Lincoln City FC after playing for the club’s academy. Green also spent time at the Stoke City FC Academy.
Whitecaps FC 2 play their home matches at the University of British Columbia in the Thunderbird Stadium. For their inaugural USL season in 2015, Whitecaps FC 2 averaged 1,682 fans per match.
A strong Western Conference proved a tough test for Whitecaps FC 2 throughout the season. Whitecaps FC 2’s first USL season started off on the wrong foot when they visited Seattle Sounders FC 2 and fell 4-0 to their Cascadia rivals. The club was able to bounce back in their next match, defeating Austin Aztex 3-0 on April 1, but would go winless for six straight matches before getting their second win of the 2015 against Real Monarchs on May 24.
Overall, Whitecaps FC 2 had eight wins, 14 losses and six draws in their first USL season. The Canadian club did not qualify for playoffs, finishing the season in eleventh place with 30 points, 16 points behind fourth-placed Republic FC.

Seven players made their Whitecaps FC 2 debut in the 1-0 victory, with newly appointed captain Kyle Greig scoring the match’s only goal in the 59th minute.
On Saturday, Whitecaps FC 2 visited Portland Timbers 2 and captured a 3-1 win to continue their great start in the 2016 USL season. Greig scored his second goal of the season when he slotted home a penalty and forward Daniel Haber would go on to score a brace with goals in the 66th minute and 73 minute.
Whitecaps FC 2 are in second place in the Western Conference, winning goal differential tiebreakers over Swope Park Rangers KC and Republic FC.

Sacramento Republic FC Academy’s U-15/16 and U-17/18 teams are back in action at Cosumnes River College Stadium this Saturday, Apr. 9, as they face off against their fellow Northern California club the San Jose Earthquakes Academy. Both teams are looking to continue their push for playoffs in the U.S. Development Academy program.
“We need to keep doing what we having been doing, and sticking to our plan of developing and being consistent,” said Academy Director Rod Underwood about the upcoming matches.
This past Saturday, the Republic FC U-15/16 team snatched a point at Starfire Sports Complex against Seattle Sounders FC’s Academy in one of two away matches played over the weekend. Republic FC got on the score sheet first in the 25th minute after an own goal from Sounders FC, but the home team would rectify their mistake and make it 2-1 in their favor by the 54th minute. However, in the 60th minute Matteo Sorrentino slotted home a penalty kick for Republic FC, rescuing a crucial road point.
After the 2-2 draw with Seattle on Saturday, the Republic FC U-15/16 team went on to soundly defeat the Portland Timbers 4-1 on Sunday with goals from Shaft Brewer Jr., Leopoldo Hernandez and Alejandro Perez. Brewer is currently ranked 10th in the Western Conference goals scored leaders board.
Currently ranked fifth in the Northwest Division of the Western Conference and holding a wildcard spot for playoffs, the U-15/16s look to better their playoff position with a positive result against the San Jose Earthquakes Academy on Saturday. The Earthquakes’ U-15/16 team comes into the match off a 1-1 draw versus De Anza Force back in early March. The team is third in the Northwest Division U-15/16 standings, but are just three points ahead of Republic FC. The Earthquakes hold a record of 12-8-3.
Spearheading their attack will be Arda Bulut, one of the most lethal strikers in the entire U-15/16 U.S. Development Academy. Bulut is currently ranked first in the Western Conference and second overall in the goals scored leaders board, with 21 goals in 22 games played.
For their part, Republic FC’s Academy U-17/18 team look extend their seven-match win streak and stay atop of the Western Conference Northwest Division this weekend. The team surpassed Vancouver for the division top spot after back-to-back wins last weekend away at Seattle and Portland.
Against Seattle Sounders FC, the Republic FC Academy U-17/18’s took a 1-0 win with a goal from Alexis Dionicio. In their second match of the weekend, an own goal from the Portland Timbers and a goal a piece for Joseph Restani and Francis Avoce secured the top spot in the Northwest Division for Republic FC. The U-17/18s are currently also the second ranked team overall in the Western Conference.
The San Jose Earthquakes U-17/18 team has not played a match since March 5, when they defeated De Anza Force 2-0. Despite winning two of their last three matches and drawing the other, the Earthquakes U-17/18 team is not in a playoff position and need a win this Saturday to keep their playoff hopes strong. The Earthquakes are in fifth place in the Northwest Division with a record of 8-10-5, five points from a wildcard position and 10 points from a playoff spot.
Overall, the Republic FC Academy has had a great inaugural season in the U.S. Development Academy. After a rocky start, the U-17/18 team has dominated their division since November, losing just once since then. With last weekend’s results, the U-17/18’s finally surpassed Vancouver Whitecaps FC to claim the top spot in the Northwest Division standings. They hold a record of 15-4-5.
“What really has set us apart [our inaugural season] is Tte work that we’ve put in,” said Underwood. “We have had a high expectation level from day one. We’ve mad some our demands very taxing on our players. We’ve had a way we wanted to play and style we wanted to play. Our coaches are organized too. We have a lot of excellence, which isn’t once a week or twice a week. It’s a long term process and that’s what we’re shooting for.”
The U-15/16 team bounced back from five straight losses in January and February to seize one of two wildcard slots in the Northwest Division and are riding a five-match unbeaten streak. With another win this Saturday, they would tie with the Earthquakes and be in a great position to snatch a direct playoff spot.
Both matches will be played at Cosumnes River College Stadium this Saturday, Apr. 9. Kick off for the U-15/16 match is 4:30 p.m., and 7:00 p.m. for the U-17/18 match. All Academy matches at Cosumnes River College Stadium are free and open to the public.

“I don’t know the exact number to be honest, I have my whole arm and I have my side. I don’t know what the total number is, but I do plan on getting a few more it’s an addiction.”
What are you most excited for about this year?
“During preseason it was just getting the season underway, and now that the season is underway just continuing this winning streak we’re on. Also I’m enjoying coming together as a team and as one, although ultimately game time is where it’s really at.”
Any matchday superstitions? If so what are they?
“I like to get a little rest in on matchdays and just hang out, have a good lunch and such. I usually like to arrive to the locker room earlier. Also it’s a must for me to get a little work done by Katy [our physical therapist] and Jesse [our chiropractor]. And I have to be at a certain locker too, it’s my third year at that locker. My locker is in the far left corner.”
What’s your favorite thing about playing defense?
“Getting in the attack as much as possible and help the team out both offensively and defensively.”
What’s your order at Chipotle?
“I usually go with the burrito bowl, brown rice, black beans. Half chicken half steak. pico, sour cream, corn, cheese, guacamole, and maybe some medium sauce.”

The U.S. Open Cup is the oldest ongoing national soccer competition in the U.S. and the world’s third-longest-running open soccer tournament. Entering it’s 103rd year of competition, this year’s U.S. Open Cup will feature a record 92 teams participating in the tiered-bracket and single-game knockout tournament.
Republic FC will enter the tournament in the Second Round along with 16 U.S.-based USL teams. Unlike last season, MLS owned and operated USL teams will not be competing in the tournament. Republic FC’s Second Round match will be against the winner of the San Francisco City FC (PDL) vs CD Aguiluchos USA (NPSL) First Round match. The match will be played on May 11 at the Beach Chalet Soccer Fields in San Francisco, Calif.
Last year, Sacramento Republic FC advanced to the Fourth Round of the U.S. Open Cup by defeating Sonoma County Sol (NPSL) 4-2 on May 20, 2015 and Chula Vista FC (SoCal Premier League) 7-3 on May 27, 2015, but were knocked out of contention after suffering a dramatic 6-5 penalty shootout defeat in the Fourth Round to the San Jose Earthquakes (MLS) on June 16, 2015.
The winning team of the U.S. Open Cup will receive a berth in the CONCACAF Champions’ Leaguefor the next season, have their name engraved on the historic Dewar Challenge Trophy and receive a cash prize. Sporting Kansas City (MLS) are the defending Cup champions.
