SACRAMENTO, California (October 17, 2021) – Republic FC played to a 0-0 draw with Tacoma Defiance on Sunday, the final meeting of the season between divisional foes. Sacramento did well to threaten on the afternoon, but was unable to find the net despite keeping the visitors on their heels for most of the second half.
Good defensive work from Tacoma would keep Sacramento relatively quiet in the first half, but Republic FC was meticulous up top, keeping 55% possession and posting five shots. Good pressure from Maalique Foster in the 15th minute put Tacoma on their heels, but Foster’s would be flagged for a foul after colliding with goalkeeper Christian Herrera.
A big defensive stop from Duke Lacroix would keep things scoreless shortly after a long injury stoppage for Tacoma’s Randy Mendoza in the 36th minute. The defender’s leaping attempt blocked Tacoma’s only shot attempt in the first half, from midfielder Juan Alvarez. Republic FC countered with numbers directly afterward, but after fielding a cross from Cam Iwasa, Darek Formella’s attempt went wide to the left.

Moments later, Emil Cuello nearly put Sacramento up 1-0 heading into the locker room at half, but his rocket from outside the 18 would go just high. Cuello finished the contest with a team high 5 shots while also completing 89% of his pass attempts and creating one scoring chance
“I thought the performance, moving of the ball, playing in between lines, getting into the final third was all what it needed to be,” said Coach Mark Briggs. “But that final piece was missing.”
Tacoma came close to breaking the stalemate just after the break. A great look for Defiance from Ray Serrano challenged Republic FC goalkeeper Carlos Saldaña, but his shot would go just high of the crossbar.
Sacramento continued to knock on the door in the second half. Darek Formella carried in to the penalty box before his shot deflected out of bounds for a corner in the 67th minute, and Kharlton Belmar nearly opened the scoring a minute later after beating two defenders, but his attempt would go just wide.

A great chance from Jaime Villarreal- who made his 100th career appearance with Sacramento in the contest, tying him for third all-time- in the 72nd minute was undone by good defending form Tacoma, and a Cam Iwasa header in the 86th was be swallowed up by Tacoma’s goalkeeper to keep things tied.

In Their Own Words: Everybody understands the pressure within these games
Sacramento Republic FC is heading into Sunday’s fourth and final matchup with Tacoma Defiance looking for a quick turnaround from Wednesday's draw with LA Galaxy II. With three games left, the push for the postseason continues to tighten up, and three points will go a long way.
Republic FC Head Coach Mark Briggs
On adjustments for Sunday’s match against Tacoma…
“The key is our mentality going into the game… making sure the mentality, focus and attitude is right. If we have that, we’ll be ok, but we’ve got to turn up and we’ve got to have the right attitude and right mentality.”
On keys for success on Sunday…
“We've got to be disciplined from a defensive standpoint and we’ve got to be prepared to be a little bit nasty from an attacking standpoint. We've got to move the ball quickly and we've got to have good movements in the final third. We’ve got to finish the actions in those areas, but the biggest thing is playing with an intensity and a speed of play that's effective.”
On the club’s sense of urgency with three games remaining…
“Everybody understands what's at stake. Everybody understands the pressure within these games. That's part of being a footballer. If you can't handle the pressure of those games, then you should be working in a supermarket or something. This is what we’re paid to do. This is what's enjoyable about it. You're playing football under pressure to win games. We've got to win games.”

Republic FC Midfielder Jordan McCrary
On tactical focuses ahead of Sunday…
“We have to be disciplined to our tactics we already have and stay to it. We have to keep each other responsible and accountable. We’ll do everything we need to do, and really be some dogs and come out with a win.”
On positives to take from Wednesday’s 1-1 draw with LA Galaxy II…
“We’re creating chances but at the end of the day we got to keep going. At the end of day we got to start putting it back of the net and then we got to start keeping it out of the net. We have to keep putting our best foot forward.”

On the team’s focus during recovery ahead of Sunday…
“We saw in the first half of the game [on Wednesday] we weren't as urgent and we weren't as quick to play. A lot of the times, it's been taking a goal and then something bad happening for us to come back out and play a bit quicker and more intense. That's something that we have to focus on come Sunday, is from the first whistle coming out, giving our all and playing as quick as possible to get on the front foot as early as we can.”
On a season-high 26 shots against Los Dos on Wednesday night…
“We definitely played a lot more attacking football. We really got after them. It's a positive sign at this point that we're creating these opportunities. We just have to put them away now. It’s at the point of the season where these things have to start going in in order for us to go where we want to get to.”

RECAP: Republic FC 1-1 LA Galaxy II
SACRAMENTO, California (October 13, 2021)–A 1-1 draw was the result in Republic FC’s return to Heart Health Park on Wednesday night. A late score from Darek Formella secured a point for Sacramento after Los Dos broke a 0-0 tie in the 57th minute. The Indomitable club manufactured chances to score all night long, finishing with a season-high 26 shots taken while holding 57% possession over their Southern California foes.
A number of opportunities put Sacramento in control early, as Mark Briggs’ men would manufacture nine chances to score before halftime. Maalique Foster nearly put Sacramento ahead in just the 4thminute, when he intercepted a weak pass to Los Dos’ goalkeeper, but his attempt went just wide of the target. Foster would put up another great look in the 12th minute, but Justin vomSteeg would get a hand on it to deflect it out.
“Over the course of the season, it’s not that we haven’t created opportunities,” said Head Coach Mark Briggs. “We’ve moved the ball, created opportunities and put ourselves in dangerous areas. But to win games, we need to be good in the defensive 18-yard box and the attacking 18-yard box, and we haven’t been good enough in either.”
Sacramento was denied by good defense on more than one occasion in the opening half. Dan Casey and Luis Felipe each had a shot blocked by Galaxy II defenders in the 14th and 15th minutes as Republic FC continued to knock on the door.
After Sacramento was denied a score on a set piece, Los Dos would break the tie in the 57th minute. Forward Preston Judd opened the scoring to give the visitors a 1-0 advantage after breaking away in transition and collecting a through pass from Joshua Drack.
Republic FC would nearly pull even minutes later, but what looked to be Cam Iwasa’s eighth score of the season was called back for offside. The forward headed in a Pete Pennanen corner kick in the 63rd, but the forward would be flagged for offside after jumping forward just a second too early.
Sacramento continued to threaten, but was unable to put an attempt on target. Pete Pennanen nearly put one inside the far post in the 67th, and Darek Formella found Maalique Foster on an excellent through ball in the 70th, but Foster was flagged for offside.
Darek Formella would get Sacramento on the board to pull even at the death in the 88th minute. After an Emil Cuello shot from 30 yards out went off the crossbar, Iwasa fielded the rebound and found the feet of Formella, who put it in to pull Republic FC even late. The score was his seventh of the season, tying him with Cam Iwasa for the team lead in goals.
Republic FC will resume action this Sunday against Tacoma Defiance. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. from Heart Health Park, and the match will be broadcast live on KQCA My58, Estrella TV Sacramento, and ESPN+.

On the approach to Republic FC’s attack ahead of Wednesday’s match with LA Galaxy II…
“It’s a mixture of confidence, technique and intensity. We've got to go to the ball like we want to score. We've got to get in front of our man. We’ve got to make things happen instead of waiting for things to happen for us. We’ve got to make things happen. We’ve got to anticipate balls.”
On Wednesday being a must-win match…
“We prepare like any other game – there's just a lot more pressure on this one. We need three points. We need everybody in that stadium to get behind us, push us and create an atmosphere that drives the players on and gives the players confidence.”
On having Luis Felipe back from yellow card suspension…
“You saw what Luis has brought to us throughout the course of the season: his energy, his long gangly frame and his ability to pick up second balls. He knicks balls in between lines and he's come up with goals this season. We’ve missed Luis, and it'll be good to have him back in the group helping us to get three points tomorrow.”

On how the playoff race has influenced the club’s preparation for Wednesday…
“It shouldn't change anything. Everybody knows what the table looks like. The only important thing for us is three points. There are no other results anymore. It's simple. It's easy to prepare for this game because we all know that the only thing that we need tomorrow is a win.”
On the importance of the club’s remaining schedule…
“Every game from now on is like a cup final for us. We need to get wins if we want to make the playoffs, and if we don't then we don't deserve it. We have four games and we go one by one, but it’s a simple thing that we have to win.”
On this past Saturday being his first start since August…
“I was out five weeks without the ability to run. That was a difficult part fitness wise, but I was I was working as hard as I could because I knew that I would be back for the rest of the season. That was the only way to prepare to get my fitness back. Of course it was the first 90 minutes, but I felt great. I didn’t have any excuses, but that's why I was working also when I was injured – to be ready.”

The Latest on the Team
The Indomitable Club secured three crucial points in the Pacific Division race on Wednesday with a 1-0 win at Tacoma Defiance. Second-half substitutes Darek Formella and Kharlton Belmar combined for the game winner in the Pacific Northwest, with Formella notching his fourth goal of the year in the 78th minute to give Republic FC its fifth clean sheet of the season. Formella’s score was the club’s fourth game winner in the final 20 minutes this season.
Emil Cuello settled in more to his attacking midfield role with the Boys in Old Glory Red, creating multiple scoring chances for the second straight game while logging three attempts on frame. In the defensive third, Nabi Kibunguchy blocked two shots and dispossessed the Defiance 12 times.
How about Los Dos?
Galaxy II snapped a two-match losing streak last weekend with a 1-0 win at Oakland Roots SC, thanks to a converted penalty from Taylor Davilla in the 75th minute. Los Dos currently sits in seventh in the Pacific Division with 26 points and seven of their remaining nine matches – including Sunday – against divisional opponents.
Head-to-Head
SRFC is 11-6-6 all-time against Galaxy II, including 4-4-3 at home. Sunday’s matchup will be the first in Sacramento since October 2, 2019, when the Indomitable Club secured a point with a dramatic 89th-minute equalizer.
Republic FC holds a 1-0-1 edge over the Southern California side in 2021. The last head-to-head matchup on September 1 saw each side convert a penalty in the final five minutes, but it was Cam Iwasa’s conversion from the spot in the 90th minute that secured a point for the Boys in Old Glory Red in a wild 3-3 draw at Dignity Health Sports Park.

Inside the Heritage of a Mexican-Colombian-American: Cultura with Tomas Gomez
Throughout Hispanic and Latinx Heritage Month, Republic FC will highlight players and staff with Hispanic and Latinx connections. This week, goalkeeper Tomas Gomez talks about his multi-nationality upbringing.
His player bio says “born in Montemorelos, Mexico,” but for goalkeeper Tomas Gomez, his sense of identity and culture goes far beyond that. “I was born in Mexico and consider that a significant part of who I am, but my family moved to the U.S. when I was two,” he explains. “And my dad was born and raised in Colombia, so a lot of my childhood was in that community.”
When it came to sports, Tomas, like many children of Hispanic and Latinx heritage, felt torn between the different “footballs.” He explains, “My mom’s family was all about American football and my grandpa really wanted me to play that, but I used to always watch soccer with my dad and felt more drawn towards that.”
And even though Tomas was selected for the U.S. Men’s U-20 National Team camp in 2012, the sense of feeling torn between cultures expands to his fandom during international competition. “I obviously like the U.S. team since I’ve lived here most of my life, but I’m almost always pulling for Colombia. And I also like to root for Mexico from time to time.”

And I also like to root for Mexico from time to time.”

The 28-year-old goalkeeper recently found a way to combine his Mexican and Colombian cultures through food here in Sacramento: “I found a Mexican restaurant that serves Colombian food, including empanadas, which are my favorite.” In fact, food is how Tomas likes to stay connected to his background. “When I’m back in St. Louis with my family, we always find time to go out and get some good Colombian food. And my mom is very good at cooking Colombian beans, which is something that my grandma on my dad’s side made when I was growing up. I try to cook Colombian food too, but it’s never the same as having my family’s cooking, so getting to experience that when I’m back home is very special to me.”
On how he can connect even more with his Mexican and Colombian heritage, Tomas hopes to get better at speaking Spanish: “My dad always watches soccer games in Spanish, so being fluent in Spanish would help me understand the broadcasters better and allow us to connect on a different level. Plus I hope to travel to Colombia and Mexico, so it would be a very helpful thing to learn.”

RECAP: Republic FC 1 – 2 San Diego Loyal SC
SAN DIEGO, California (October 9, 2021) – Sacramento fell to San Diego Loyal SC by a score of 2-1 on Saturday evening. A score from Darek Formella to put Sacramento ahead in the 30th minute wouldn’t be enough, as Landon Donovan’s squad netted two just after the start of the second half to take control of the match.
Sacramento was excellent defensively in the first half, limiting space for San Diego attackers in the middle of the field and keeping opportunities to a minimum as a result. Loyal SC would tally just three scoring chances in the first half, all of them coming from Tumi Moshobane.
After fielding a clearance from Shannon Gomez, Darek Formella carried from midfield through two San Diego defenders before punching one through to open the scoring just before the half hour mark. The score tied him for fourth all-time in club scoring, and was his second goal in as many matches after netting an equalizer in Wednesday’s meeting with Oakland Roots
Republic FC nearly doubled their advantage moments after the start of the second half, when Jerome Kiesewetter drew a foul in the attacking third. Dan Casey got his head on a Darek Formella free kick inside the penalty area, but the defender’s attempt would go just wide of the target. San Diego knotted things up at one apiece moments later, when Alejandro Guido struck one past Carlos Saldaña following a free kick for the hosts in the 54th minute.
Corey Hertzog nearly put Loyal SC ahead just seconds later, but his chip shot from the top of the 18 would go off the post. The hosts would pull ahead in the 58th, when Douglas Martinez would find the goal off a pass from Alejandro Guido in space.
“To go up ahead 1-0 was good,” said Head Coach Mark Briggs. “But I think we lost our heads for five minutes, which was the difference between getting something from the game and not. We just had a crazy period where we lost our composure a little bit.”
The Indomitable Club continued to threaten, but was unable to equalize as time continued to wind down. Cam Iwasa nearly put two attempts in after entering late, but neither would find the net as San Diego’s defense would neutralize both efforts. A Jordan McCrary shot from the top of the 18 would be blocked shortly afterward, allowing the hosts to keep their lead intact.
Making his first start since August 11, Pete Pennanen performed well for Sacramento. The midfielder led Republic FC with 84% passing for the match while also finishing with three intercepted passes.
Republic FC will return to action this coming Wednesday, October 13, when they take on LA Galaxy II on Noche Latina II at Heart Health Park. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. and the match will be broadcast live on KQCA My58, Estrella TV Sacramento, and ESPN+.

On what needs to happen to get three points…
“We have to be clinical, and be better organized. Oakland got opportunities and took advantage of them [on Wednesday]. We put ourselves in a handful of great scenarios with good conditions, but we didn’t take the opportunities like we should have. We’ll need to do that to win.”

On preparing for San Diego this week…
“We’ve wanted to get our bodies moving, so we’re trying to stay fresh. San Diego is a very good team, they move the ball well and create overloads in certain areas of the field. We have to be aware of those and combat them when we have the ball. We just need to go down there and produce.”
On every match being important in the final stretch…
“We need to take one game at a time, each one as it comes. We need to focus on every match and make sure we are ready to go. Then we have to go out and produce, so hopefully we can go out and get the result that we need.”

On training this week…
“We’re trying to get our legs back. We have a tough stretch of games coming up and they all count the same. They’re all three points. We all have the same goal every time we step on the field. Our goal is to get three points. We didn’t get the results against our rivals away from home, unfortunately, but we’re still in the picture. We’re still pushing and we’re still going to keep fighting for 90 minutes every time we step on the field.”
On if every remaining game being a playoff match changes the team’s preparation…
“It doesn’t. We come with the same intensity, focus, drive and determination. The coaching staff and training staff has been doing everything they can to give us the best opportunity to win. Players are competing. That’s what we’re going to go out there and do. It doesn’t change too much of what we’re doing, but we have to go in and get the results.”
On how the team’s history against San Diego influences confidence ahead of Saturday…
“It’s important to recognize the history of certain competitions, but at the end of the day, you step on the field and it’s a clean slate. They’re going to bring what they’re going to bring and we’re going to bring what we’re going to bring, regardless of what’s happened in the past. We’re going to do our best to get three points. At the end of the day, it’s you against your opponent on that given day, and what happens, happens that day.”

On the importance of a good performance…
“We need it. Obviously, we’re running out of points and time and we need to start stacking up some wins. It will be full steam ahead tomorrow night as we go and work hard for three points. It’s a little bit more pressure but we need to make sure we go out and get the maximum every week.”
