San Antonio FC (5-4-6) tied Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC (7-8-3) 1-1 at Weidner Field on Saturday night. A converted penalty kick from Rafa Castillo earned the club a point on the road.
“The guys showed a lot of determination and character to get the point,” SAFC Head Coach Darren Powell said. “The first half was always going to be difficult because we were going into the wind, but we limited their chances. We regrouped at halftime after their goal and the guys came in with great character and determination to get the point.”
The Switchbacks opened the scoring in the dying moments of the first half after Shane Malcolm was brought down inside the SAFC box by goalkeeper Diego Restrepo. Midfielder Jordan Burt stepped up and converted from the spot to earn the hosts the 1-0 lead at the break.
SAFC midfielder Rafa Castillo then found the equalizer after the Alamo City club was awarded a penalty of their own. Castillo stepped up and converted from the spot to level the score 1-1.
The goal marks Castillo’s third of the season in all competitions, as well as his third converted penalty in 2018. The goal also marked the Colombian’s 11th for the club since its 2016 inaugural season, making him the lone all-time top scorer after sharing the honor with former SAFC midfielder Billy Forbes (10).
SAFC defender Gianluca Cuomo made his USL debut on the night, recording six tackles, seven clearances, four interceptions, and nine possessions gained in 90 minutes played. Cuomo previously made two appearances for the club in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, featuring in 210 minutes played.
SAFC forward Kyle Murphy also recorded his first start for the club, recording one shot, one shot on target, and two chances created in 61 minutes played.
San Antonio FC will return to USL action on Wednesday, July 4 at Toyota Field. The match will feature a postgame firework celebration as well as $1 beer & sodas courtesy of Bud Light. The club will also host an ‘Extra Time’ postgame party with live music, games, and more.
