San Antonio FC has signed veteran midfielder and Texas native Sonny Guadarrama for the 2018 USL season pending league and federation approval, the club announced today. Guadarrama joins SAFC after spending his entire professional career in Liga and Ascenso MX.
Guadarrama brings over 10 years of experience in Mexican professional soccer, most recently spending time with Dorados de Sinaloa on loan from Atlante from 2015-16. After joining Atlante permanently in 2010, the Austin native appeared in 46 matches with the club from 2010-16 while also spending time on loan to Venados, Necaxa and Sinaloa where he combined to make over 70 appearances and score 19 goals. Overall, Guadarrama has scored 25 goals at the professional level in Mexico.
“Sonny has an excellent pedigree,” said SAFC Head Coach Darren Powell. “We remember him from his college days at Campbell University and we have always liked the way he plays the game. He became available this offseason and joined us on trial. He has impressed the staff and he is someone we are excited to see continue his career in his native south Texas with San Antonio FC.”
The 30-year-old got his professional start with five-time Liga MX champions Santos Laguna, when he joined the club in 2006. After two years and nine appearances with Santos, Guadarrama joined Venados for his first stint with the Merida based club, making 31 appearances over parts of three seasons prior to moving to Atlante. After growing up and playing youth soccer in Austin, Guadarrama attended Campbell University and was named the Atlantic Sun Conference Freshman of the Year after his only season with the Camels. He also played with the Austin Lightning of the PDL during his time in college and has made appearances with the United States U-17, U-18 and U-20 national teams.
“It feels great to be back in Texas,” said Guadarrama. “I am looking forward to giving my best for this club every day on the field to bring glory to God and hopefully a championship to San Antonio.”
Following the addition of Guadarrama, the SAFC roster currently stands at 23. He will wear No. 33 for the club.
