San Antonio FC goalkeeper Diego Restrepo took the USL by storm in 2017. The Venezuela native, who was “one week away from calling it quits” in his career, joined the Alamo City club on March 9, just two weeks before the start of the season.
Restrepo made his club debut on April 22, coming off the bench for the injured Matt Cardone and closing out the match without conceding a goal to secure the 2-1 win at Vancouver. On May 6, he made his home debut at Toyota Field, earning a clean sheet in the team’s 1-0 win against Sacramento Republic FC.
Restrepo maintained that same form throughout the campaign, leading the club to the best collective defensive performance in the league, recording just four losses and conceding 24 goals (21 individually). Restrepo led the USL with 12 clean sheets, recording 69 saves, posting a 76.7 percent save success rate, and finishing as runner-up in the race for the USL Golden Glove with a 0.80 goals against average.
Over the course of the season, Restrepo’s performances in goal earned him USL Team of the Week honors on two occasions, as well as one on the Team of the Week Bench. In addition, the keeper set a club individual record for most consecutive clean sheets, recording seven in a row from April 28 through June 10, and recording a club season-high six saves in a single match on Sept. 9 at LA Galaxy II.
