San Antonio FC concluded its second season in the USL on Saturday. Despite an unfortunate elimination from the USL Cup Playoffs through a penalty shootout, the Alamo City club has much to be proud of looking back on its sophomore season. Take a look at some numbers that highlight the milestones:
1. With a month remaining in the USL regular season, San Antonio FC clinched its first-ever playoff berth with a 1-0 win at Orange County SC.
2. San Antonio FC recorded the second-longest shutout streak in USL history in the 2017 season, playing 672 USL minutes without conceding a goal from April 28 – June 17.
4. SAFC recorded just four losses in the 2017 regular season, the fewest in among all USL teams. In addition, the Alamo City club lost just once within the friendly confines of Toyota Field after not recording a loss at home in over a calendar year.
5. Midfielder Billy Forbes led the club in five different categories: goals (10), assists (nine), shots (52), shots on goal (23), and appearances (T, 31).
12. Goalkeeper Diego Restrepo led the USL with 12 clean sheets. Restrepo also posted a 0.80 goals against average, 69 saves and 76.5 percent save success rate.
14. San Antonio FC opened the 2017 season with a 14-match unbeaten streak. The 14-game unbeaten run marked the fourth longest to start a season in USL history, and the longest since the 2015 Rochester Rhinos played their first 19 matches without a loss.
29. The Silver and Black earned 29 points through the first 11 matches of the 2017 season, recording the best start in USL history and tying the best start by any professional soccer club in American history in the current format of MLS, the USL, NASL and NWSL. Only the 1996 LA Galaxy and 2017 San Antonio FC earned 29 points in the clubs’ first 11 matches to begin the season.
62. The Alamo City club finished the USL regular season in second place in the Western Conference, earning 62 points in 32 matches. Last season, SAFC concluded their inaugural season in 10th place in the standings and with 38 points.
After narrowly missing out on the USL Playoffs in their inaugural season, San Antonio FC significantly improved in its second campaign, proving to be one of the best sides in the league and reaching important milestones both within the club and the USL. Now, the Silver and Black can look to the offseason to reset and look forward to 2018.
