San Antonio FC continues to wind down its regular season and continue its push for the top seed heading into the 2020 playoffs. Having clinched their playoff berth and first-round home match already, SAFC will look to these final two road matches as an avenue to secure home field advantage throughout the playoffs.
Their penultimate regular season opponent is a strong FC Tulsa side. Like SAFC, FC Tulsa has it all to play for as the club looks to tie up the second playoff spot in Group D. Currently, they are fighting neck and neck with the Austin Bold to earn the postseason entry, and a home win for the Oklahoma club this weekend would go a long with in their quest.
“We wanted to put our best foot forward and compete and try to remain undefeated at home in the regular season,” SAFC Head Coach Alen Marcina said after last week’s win. “We’ve achieved that objective, but we will continue to take it one game at a time and keep improving, learning and progressing as a team, starting with Tulsa.”
SAFC is coming off back to back home wins against the Austin Bold and OKC Energy FC, outscoring their opponents 5-2 in those matches. The Alamo City club currently leads the Western Conference with 33 points and will look to get maximum points out of their two final matches in an effort to clinch home field advantage. The already potent strike force has been reinforced with the emergence of on-loan forward Jordan Perruzza who scored a brace last weekend vs. the Energy.
Due to some match postponements, FC Tulsa are fresh having not played a competitive game since Sept. 12 when they tied the Energy 1-1. Tulsa currently sits on 16 points, two behind the Austin Bold with a game in hand. Should they get three points against SAFC on Saturday, they would be in pole position for the second Group D playoff spot with two matches remaining.
These two sides have played close games so far this season. After drawing 0-0 in Tulsa to start the season series, SAFC defeated FC Tulsa 2-0 at home in the reverse fixture. Should SAFC defeated Tulsa on Saturday, the Alamo City club will have defeated every Group D opponent both home and away in 2020.
Following this weekend’s match, SAFC will travel to Austin Bold FC on Oct. 4 for the final match of the regular season. SAFC is preparing to host its first playoff match the weekend following the match in Austin.
