San Antonio FC earned a 3-1 win against St. Edward’s University and a 2-0 win against UT RGV in two closed-door preseason friendly matches at Toyota Field on Saturday. Goals from Kris Tyrpak, Ever Guzman, Connor Presley, Cesar Elizondo, and Alex Bruce gave SAFC two victories to remain unbeaten in the preseason.
“I think both groups today had been working on things at practice that translated to the game,” SAFC Head Coach Darren Powell said. “There are things we need to continue to work with on both sides of the ball, and there were some things I wasn’t too pleased with but also several things that I was pleased with. I think today was a good exercise.”
SAFC beat St. Edward’s University 3-1 in the first match of the day. Midfielder Kris Tyrpak opened the scoring in the 12th minute after finding the ball at the top of the box following a clearance by the visitors and burying it past the goalkeeper with a right-footed volley.
Forward Ever Guzman widened the lead in the 31st minute after midfielder Sonny Guadarrama dribbled past the goalkeeper and lofted the ball across the box to Guzman, who headed it into the open net for the 2-0 lead. Midfielder Connor Presley then added the third goal for the hosts in the second half after finding the end of a through-ball before the visitors pulled one back in the final minutes of the match.
In the second match of the day, forward Cesar Elizondo found the back of the net after finding himself in on goal at the end of a through-ball, after which he slotted the ball past the UT RGV goalkeeper for the 1-0 lead. Forward Alex Bruce then added a second goal off a tap-in just before the full-time whistle shortly after coming on as a substitute.
San Antonio FC will return to action on Friday, March 2 as they host South Texas rivals Rio Grande Valley FC at Toyota Field at 7:30 p.m. in a preseason friendly. Fans can purchase tickets to the match by calling 210-444-5MLS or by visiting www.sanantoniofc.com.
