The Switchbacks lost to Sacramento Republic FC 1-0 on Saturday night in front of a crowd of 3,808 at Weidner Field.
Coming off of a 1-1 draw against Oklahoma City on the road, the Switchbacks were looking to take down one of the better teams in the Western conference in Sacramento Republic FC. After a short lightning delay in the 8th minute, the game resumed in the sunshine. Marty Maybin combined with AJ Ajeakwa to receive the ball on top of the 18-yard-box but Maybin's shot was put over the crossbar in the 33rd minute. Five minutes later, Sacramento had a free kick that Jaime Villarreal crossed into Villyan Bijev as he put his headed effort into the back of the net to put the visitors up 1-0 going into the half.
Nicholas Amoako subbed on in the 62nd minute to make his professional debut at 20 years of age as he provided a spark off the bench. In the 78th minute, AJ Ajeakwa found the ball at his feet eight yards from goal when he turned and fired a shot but Josh Cohen mat hed the shot with a good save to keep the game 1-0 for Sacramento. Amoako found space on top of the box six minutes into stoppage time but his low effort was saved by Cohen and that turned out to be the last kick of the game.
"I just wish we finished our opportunities. We had one early and we had one late as well, and we just can't give up early goals," said Man of the Match, AJ Ajeakwa.
The Switchbacks are back at Weidner Field on July 21st to face the Tulsa Roughnecks. The first 500 fans in attendance will receive a free Switchbacks poster courtesy of the Better Business Bureau of Southern Colorado. Tickets start at just $12 and are available here.
