Colorado Springs, CO (March 11, 2017)– The Colorado Springs Switchbacks defeated the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs 3-1 in a preseason friendly at Weidner Field.
The Switchbacks showed their strength early in the match controlling the majority of possession as well as getting a number of shots of in the attacking third. The Switchbacks were finally able to find the back of the net in the 39th minute as the Switchbacks broke down the right side with Shane Malcolm beating his man and Chris James was there to put it away. However, the lead wouldn't last long as UCCS was able to find an equalizer in the 42nd minute after playing the ball just over Dan Jackson's head. Kevaughn Frater was then able to beat his man but was taken down in the box just before halftime. It would be Chris James who would calmly put the ball into the back of the net to give the Switchbacks a 2-1 lead into halftime.
The Switchbacks would make a number of changes in the second half to the team to get some playing time for the substitutes. Despite numerous second half chances, it wouldn't be until the 84th minute when the Switchbacks would put the game away. Conner Beavans broke down the right side and played a ball to Jack Jones who put the shot away. The Switchbacks would finish the game with a 3-1 win over the Mountain Lions.
"It was a good exercise," said Head Coach Steve Trittschuh. "They still have work to do in preparing for the season. But, we're starting to put things together."
The Switchbacks will wrap up their preseason with a home match against Harpos FC on Saturday, March 18th at 7:00 PM. Tickets are $5 and can be purchased here or at the box office.
The Switchbacks will open their USL season on March 25th, and they take on the Tulsa Roughnecks FC away from home before returning to Weidner Field on April 1st for the home opener against Oklahoma City Energy FC. Kickoff is at 6:00 PM and tickets are available here.
