Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC Fall Late On The Road To Fresno FC
Fresno, CA (August 24, 2019) – The Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC lost on a late goal to Fresno FC on Saturday night at Chukchansi Field.
The first half was cagey which only saw a half-chance for each side as Jordan Burt fired a shot from distance over the crossbar while Abraham Rodriguez was forced into making a comfortable save. Rony Argueta, playing against his former team, found Saeed Robinson who dribbled to the top of the box before firing a shot off the post and into the back of the net to give the Switchbacks the lead in the 63rd minute. But Fresno would equalize just five minutes later through Hiroki Kurimoto's volley that Rodriguez could only get a piece of. The hosts wouldn't relinquish the lead after they scored on a corner that Ramon Del Campo put away from close range in the final minute of the game.
The Switchbacks return to Weidner Field on August 31st to face the Phoenix Rising FC on Free Underwear Night. The first 1,000 fans in attendance will receive a free pair of Switchbacks underwear courtesy of Sheath. Full 16oz beers will be available for $1 for the first 30 minutes after gates open at 5:00 PM. Tickets start at just $12 and are available HERE. For the price of a Switchbacks ticket and 2-5 beers, it is cheaper than buying 2-5 beers at a bar or restaurant.

Vargish's View: Colorado Springs Switchbacks Look To Rebound On The Road Against Fresno
The Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC head to the San Joaquin Valley this Saturday evening as they face off against Fresno FC at Chukchansi Park in the USL Championship. Fresno, who have not lost in four games, are currently in third place in the 2019 USL Championship and are tied on points with second place Reno 1868 FC.
After wild, high-scoring draws at Weidner Field in Colorado Springs against the Portland Timbers 2 and Rio Grande Valley FC Toros respectively, the Switchbacks fell on the road last weekend in Sacramento. “Fresno are a good team,” said Switchbacks captain Jordan Burt. “I think right now we need to find how to take our game to the next level to get some results. It’s going to take everyone – we haven’t done well on the road and now we need to re-set during this week at home.” Burt scored the only goal of the match on June 1st as the Switchbacks defeated Fresno 1-0 at Weidner Field.

Switchbacks midfielder Rony Argueta will be returning to the fifth largest city in California, after spending the 2018 USL season with Fresno FC. “I’m excited to go back and see some familiar faces, but my focus is here and making sure that we are better every day,” said Argueta early Tuesday morning in Colorado Springs. “We have to continue to improve and if we take care of the details we’ll create and put away our chances. Fresno will keep doing what they have each game – they’ve changed a little over the season, but they’re another team that’s strong all around and they’ll push us and play the same way they always have where they look for the win at home.”
Fresno FC followed up back-to-back 2-1 wins with a hard-fought 1-1 draw with the Real Monarchs of Salt Lake City last Friday at Chukchansi Park. Jaime Chávez opened the scoring for Fresno FC, before Douglas Martinez tied the match for the Monarchs in the second half. Chávez is tied for Fresno’s lead in goals with Qudus Lawal and Jemal Johnson with each player having scored 7 times in 2019. Argentine Juan Pablo Caffa and Brazilian Jackson each have 5 assists this season.
“Fresno are playing much better,” said Switchbacks Interim Head Coach Wolde Harris. “They have a lot of weapons: [Qudus] Lawal and [Jaime] Chávez] are very dangerous. [Jemal] Johnson is a really good player. In their last game they changed their formation and we’ve seen they can play in a number of different ways. Fresno played a 3-4-3 and they have players that can change things around. [Juan Pablo] Caffa can make a lot of things happen for them. We have to be prepared and take responsibility for our performance; we’ll go forward and get a better look at Fresno this week.”

Saturday’s loss in Sacramento saw the Switchbacks total 18 shots and over 50% of possession against the Republic FC. “We’re going to look to improve and take our chances,” said Harris. ”We’re going to see how the week goes, but I know I’ll be looking for people to work and concentrate for the entire game. We have to take how we play at home on the road in terms of our confidence. It seems like we’re unsure of ourselves on the road. We’ve created chances and this weekend we have another challenge and opportunity to go on the road and play well.“

“We need to concentrate for the entire game and eliminate our mistakes,” said Saeed Robinson. “I don’t care if we have 1% possession: we need to score. We just need to come together as a team and keep communicating. That’s a hard place to play – even when I used to play in the PDL against them it was a difficult trip.”

Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC Drop Result In Sacramento
Sacramento, CA (August 17, 2019) – The Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC fell to the Sacramento Republic FC 4-0 on Saturday night at Papa Murphy's Park.
The Switchbacks had an early opportunity as a back-heel from Tucker Bone set up Saeed Robinson but Robinson's shot was just wide of the near post. Sacramento would take the lead when Jose Villarreal got in behind the defense before slotting his shot into the back of the net. After the break, Sacramento newcomer, Thomas Enevoldsen scored a quick brace to extend the host's lead to three in the 60th minute. In the final half-hour, Cesar Romero fired off a shot that was tipped over the bar by Bobby Shuttleworth but it was Cameron Iwasa that found the back of the net with an emphatic half-volley to finish off the 4-0 win for Sacramento.

Vargish's View: Colorado Springs Switchbacks Aiming To Bring Good Form On The Road
It’s Papa Murphy’s Park time as the Colorado Springs Switchbacks head west to California’s capitol city to face Sacramento Republic FC this Saturday evening in the USL Championship. Cameron Iwasa scored the only goal of the game on March 16th at Weidner Field in Colorado Springs as the Switchbacks fell 1-0 to Sacramento in just the second match of the season for the two clubs.
“Both teams are completely different right now,” said Switchbacks captain Jordan Burt. “They’re hitting form and playing well and we’ll watch some of their recent games this week. That’s a good place to play on a good field and in front of a big crowd – I’m excited for it.”

Rwandan center back Abdul Rwatubyaye snatched a dramatic injury-time equalizer for the Switchbacks last weekend at Weidner Field in a wild 3-3 draw with the Rio Grande Valley FC Toros. “I was very satisfied after getting the goal – we wanted to get a point so that was a good moment for me and the team,” said Rwatubyaye early Tuesday morning in Colorado Springs.
On Monday, Danish striker Thomas Enevoldsen was acquired by Sacramento Republic after having started the 2019 USL Championship season with Indy Eleven. Enevoldsen’s signing comes less than a week after Sacramento Republic added former Major League Soccer goalkeeper Bobby Shuttleworth on-loan from Minnesota United. Shuttleworth is odds-on to make his debut with Sacramento against the Switchbacks, after joining Head Coach Simon Elliott’s team following Minnesota United’s 5-3 loss to FC Dallas on Saturday at Toyota Stadium in which Shuttleworth was an unused substitute.
Rony Argueta will be available for the Switchbacks on Saturday after serving a three-match suspension. “It’s been a long three games for me to be missing and it feels good to be back available,” said Argueta in Colorado Springs. “I’m excited to be back – hopefully I can earn my spot back in the team.”

“We’re looking forward to Rony’s ball-control in the middle of the field and his defensive tenacity – especially against a team as talented and dangerous as Sacramento is at home,” said Switchbacks Interim Head Coach Wolde Harris. “Sacramento have a really strong front-four. [Stefano] Bonomo is a very physical forward and he’s hard to deal with. [Villyan] Bijev and [Sam] Werner are dangerous players and [Cameron] Iwasa is a guy that’s hurt us before. We have to make sure we’re transitioning quickly from defense into our attack and catch Sacramento while they’re disorganized. We gave up a poor goal against Sacramento but at their place this weekend we’ll have another opportunity to pick up points. We’re looking to build off our last two performances – especially offensively – and take what we did well on the road against a good team.”
Just days after announcing they had signed goalkeeper Abe Rodriguez to a professional contract, the Switchbacks announced the signing of Mexican striker Fernando González Delphín on Tuesday morning. “He’s a player with first-team experience in Liga MX,” said Harris. “He can finish chances and that’s what we need. It’s good to have another player who can add to the team when we need points as much as we do now. He’s going to add value to our group and another offensive option for us, and we know he’ll fit in and we look forward to having him here.”

It’s exciting and I’m looking forward to see what he does and we all look forward to helping him acclimate to the club and to the team.”
“It’s always good to get new guys in,” added Jordan Burt. “We need more players and to get a guy for this final push really helps us.”
