Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC Conclude 2020 Season with Loss to FC Tulsa

Colorado Springs, CO (October 3, 2020) – The Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC concluded the 2020 season with a 2-0 loss to FC Tulsa in Oklahoma.
FC Tulsa started the game on the front foot as Rodrigo da Costa brought down a ball and shot from point-blank range but Switchbacks' goalkeeper Sean Melvin got down and pushed the ball wide with a strong hand to keep the score level early. However, the hosts would take the lead in the 36th minute as da Costa played a looping cross into the head of Marlon who headed the ball back towards where it came from to sneak inside the post.
Four minutes later, an FC Tulsa through ball was met just outside of the box by Sean Melvin bravely sliding in to clear the ball. Unfortunately for the Switchbacks, the clearance bounced off the shin of an onrushing da Costa and looped into the air and bounced into the back of the net to double the hosts lead.
The Switchbacks now turn the page and shift their focus to 2021 with a new logo and the Downtown Stadium set to open in early 2021 for the USL Championship season.

“It was an impressive play – anytime you clear the ball off the line it’s an important moment in the game,” said Switchbacks Head Coach Alan Koch. “I think it was just showing a sense of togetherness and doing whatever it takes to preserve the clean sheet. The Switchbacks can pride themselves on having had a blue-collar approach so far in the existence of the club and I think we need to stay true to that, but what we’ve really tried to do this year is to build on that by playing attractive football at the same time. We don’t want to lose sight of what the club has built and where we’ve got to, but the flip side is that we’re obviously trying to play an attractive brand of soccer now as we move toward the new stadium next year.”
“I’ve been feeling good and comfortable at center back and I’ve been very proud of the team,” said Culiacán-born Rubio on Thursday morning. “Saturday is a very important game because it’s the last game of the season and we need to finish well at Tulsa – that would give us a good feeling as a team. It will be a difficult game because we don’t have a lot of time to recover, so it’s very important that when we train we have good recovery so that we can be at 100% for the game.”

With just one day of preparation before making their way to the Sooner State, Switchbacks players were focused on recovery the day after the draw with El Paso. “All the work has been done in preseason, and all the other times where we’ve had only a week to prepare we always planned ahead and Coach already knows what we’re capable of doing,” said South African George Lebese. “So right now, it’s about taking care of our bodies and being ready to go for Saturday, but we’ll be good. As a new group that only started playing together this season, I think we did ok at times. Obviously we have quality players and we expect to do much better, but we did ok – especially towards the end. We kept on fighting, we kept on improving, and we’ve been playing good teams that are making the playoffs and even they say that we’ve played some good football. I think we’ve built a really solid foundation. Overall we are not very happy, but we are happy with the progress. We’ve learned a lot about each other and about the game as well. I don’t think any of us has ever been in this kind of situation considering how crazy the year has been. It’s definitely been a challenge for all of us. Personally for me it’s been a challenge too; having to meet all these guys and learn to play with them and make friends and obviously spend time with them all season, and they’ve become like family. I’ve enjoyed the challenge personally and it’s been great to be with this team. Hopefully I’m going to help to make the results better next year.”
Cuban striker Darío Suárez leads FC Tulsa in goals with 8. Former Switchbacks forward Tobenna Uzo notched a brace in FC Tulsa’s 3-2 victory against Sooner State rivals Oklahoma City Energy FC on Wednesday night, including an 88th minute winner. Uzo, who was introduced into Wednesday’s match in the 77th minute, scored just two minutes after coming on before notching the aforementioned winner just before the end of regular time.

“Already today I’ve watched Tulsa – their games earlier this season, and their game last night against Oklahoma City,” said Head Coach Koch on Thursday evening. “And I’ve re-watched our game from last night. Tulsa are a team that’s flying. You can see that they’re incredibly positive and they’re doing whatever it takes to win. They scored two late goals last night to win the game and they’re on the cusp of making the playoffs. As important as the game was last night against El Paso for El Paso to try to win the division, Saturday’s game is going to be equally important for Tulsa. These are the games we want to play in. We want to play in meaningful games and I thought our guys embraced a meaningful game last night and we expect our group to embrace another big challenge on Saturday.”
Michigander Sean Lewis has started all of FC Tulsa’s matches in goal during the 2020 USL Championship season, with the former Oakland University shot-stopper having kept 3 clean sheets.
San Antonio FC have long been confirmed as runaway winners of Group D of the USL Championship, with FC Tulsa and Austin Bold FC fighting over a berth in the 2020 Playoffs. With Austin’s 2-0 loss on Wednesday night to the Rio Grande Valley FC Toros, FC Tulsa know that a draw against the Switchbacks on Saturday will be enough for Michael Nsien’s team to clinch a playoff berth.
“Tulsa is a club that’s obviously invested a lot – they have new ownership that really came in with additional resources and they’ve invested very wisely,” added Koch. “I like the makeup of their team. They’ve signed some talented players – there’s a few that we actually tried to get last year that chose to go to Tulsa, so I’m looking forward to seeing them and playing against them. I have a lot of respect for what Tulsa have done as a club and we’re trying to do the exact same thing.”

Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC Play To Scoreless Draw in Final Game at Weidner Field

Colorado Springs, CO (September 30, 2020) – The Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC played out to a scoreless draw against El Paso Locomotive FC on Wednesday night in the last ever game at Weidner Field.
In a tight first half, the Switchbacks had the best two opportunities starting with Aidan Daniels finding space on top of the penalty box and curling his effort just over the crossbar at the right post. The Switchbacks earned a corner kick in the 41st minute and played the ball short to Luke Ferreira on top of the penalty box but his shot was just wide of the left post.
Early in the second half, one of the best chances of the game fell to the foot of Luke Ferreira when El Paso misplayed a pass that put Ferreira in on goal but a defender recovered just enough to block the shot. Ten minutes later, El Paso defender Macauley King fired a shot at the upper corner but Switchbacks goalkeeper, Sean Melvin, got his fingertips to the ball to tip it over the bar.
With only nine minutes left in the game, El Paso redirected a cross to the left post back across the six-yard box to Leandro Carrijo who headed his effort towards goal from short range. However, Switchbacks defender Everardo Rubio was on the goal line to block the shot with his chest before clearing the ball to preserve the clean sheet and the draw with the 2019 Western Conference Finalists.
The Switchbacks end the 2020 USL Championship regular season on Saturday when the team travels to Oklahoma to take on FC Tulsa at 6pm MT.

Alan Koch
On keeping the team motivated to finish the 2020 season strong:
"The team we played against tonight has the potential to go on and win this thing. So for us to go toe to toe with them, and be a little disappointed that we didn’t win it in the end, shows the growth, shows where we’re going. I think we know we still got a long way to go. There’s moments in games that need to be a little bit better, but I’m incredibly proud of the performance tonight."
On what he wants to tell the fans:
"Thank you. Honestly, you can feel the love growing. And this is a new group, we’ve also got a new coaching staff, new players but you can feel when we walk around after the games, you can feel that love and you can feel that affection, and we truly appreciate it."
Jordan Burt
On getting a result tonight:
"This was one of our best games all season. It was awesome to see the work that guys put in. Definitely unfortunate to not get a win there. But it's a cruel game, you know. I probably should have scored that, could have gone on a high note, but it's a cruel game. Just gotta keep moving forward I guess."
On what he wants to tell the fans:
"Big thank you.You know I walked around afterwards and its crazy how many of them I know by name. Just appreciative of them supporting us through all the ups and downs. You know this is a special place, so I’ll be sad to not play anymore games here, but the fans make it special so thank you to the fans."
Rony Argueta
On the takeaways from tonight's game:
"The positive outlook on it really. They’re a really good team, El Paso, coach said it afterwards, they can definitely take it all the way and win it all. So for us to battle against them for a couple games now, I think that it shows a lot about what we have. I think it's just piecing it all together now."
On what he wants to tell the fans:
"Thank you guys for sticking with us, the highs and the lows. Definitely more lows, but you guys are always there for us. We really appreciate the support. Looking forward to next season, but we still got one more game, still got Tulsa so we’re looking to win that one."

Colorado Springs Switchbacks Historic Final Game at Weidner Field Wednesday
Colorado Springs, CO (September 29, 2020) – The Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC will play their final ever game at Weidner Field on Wednesday, September 30th at 7pm MT.
The Switchbacks have called Weidner Field (or Fortress Sand Creek) home since the club's inaugural season in 2015. Weidner Field has hosted over 85 USL Championship games and two USL Championship Playoff games in its six seasons.
Switchbacks defender Jordan Burt has been with the club every season since 2015. "There's been so many great games and so many great players that have played on that field and you always remember your last game at certain places, so I want to make it a good memory," said Burt.
Originally a park built in 1985, the Switchbacks performed a $3.0M renovation of the stadium that incorporated a 5,000 seat venue, press box, enhanced sports lighting, suite seating, broad cement concourses, restrooms, locker rooms, administrative offices, concessions, public Wi-Fi, and a LED display.
Sitting at 6,600 feet above sea level, Weidner Field has been the highest professional soccer stadium in all of the United States. "Wednesday will be something special for sure," said Switchbacks veteran Rony Argueta. "And not just for the few of us that have been here for quite some time now, but for everyone."
The Switchbacks will be moving into a state of the art stadium in Downtown Colorado Springs in 2021 for the USL Championship season. Construction on the 145,500-square-foot venue has continued throughout the year to have the 8,000 seat stadium ready for the Spring of 2021.

“We said to the guys today at training that Wednesday is a historic night for the Switchbacks,” said Head Coach Alan Koch. “Playing our last game in a stadium is always going to be something you’re going to remember, and you’re going to remember things in a far more positive light when you win. We’d like to go out and put in a good performance and hopefully get a good result for the fans.”

At this level it’s performance-based, so we’re going to look to win the game – that’s what we’re here to do.”
El Paso sit atop Group C in the USL Championship, having clinched a berth in the playoffs alongside fellow Group C members New Mexico United. On August 8th, El Paso ran away 4-2 winners against the Switchbacks at Southwest University Park in Far West Texas. Wednesday’s opponents fought out a 0-0 draw on August 22nd at Weidner Field. September 16th saw the Locomotive win 2-1 in El Paso, behind goals from former Switchback Saeed Robinson, and El Paso native Omar Salgado. El Paso will be worried about the fitness of Salgado as they head into the playoffs, after the former United States youth international was forced off in the 18th minute of the Locomotive’s 0-0 draw last Saturday evening against New Mexico United at Southwest University Park.
“El Paso are clearly a very good team,” said Burt. “They’re playing for first place in the conference so it’s going to take a lot of work and hopefully we can put in a good shift. Today is mostly about getting ready physically, and also to challenge everyone to come at this week with the right mental approach. El Paso have got a lot to play for and we’ve got our pride to play for and I think that’s a good challenge mentally for everyone to rise to.”

“They’re a really good team – especially with the ball and in possession,” said Argueta on Monday afternoon when asked about the Locomotive. “I think we can hurt them on the counter-attack, especially out here with the altitude. Toward the end the game could get stretched and we’ll look to punish them if we can. Today was mainly regen and guys that didn’t get a lot of playing time on Saturday trained a little longer, but tomorrow will be a little more tactical and more preparation for our game on Wednesday.”
El Paso are unbeaten since a 3-1 defeat in The Valley of the Sun to Phoenix Rising on August 1st. Undisputed number one goalkeeper Logan Ketterer has kept back-to-back clean sheets behind a defense that’s anchored by Haitian international center back Mechack Jérôme.

Colorado Springs Switchbacks mirror consistent pressure against Salt Lake City

Colorado Springs, CO (September 26, 2020) – Tonight's penultimate home match for the Switchbacks sees them play Salt Lake City's Real Monarchs for the fourth and final time this season after the restart. After the Switchbacks' win last week against New Mexico, the team was looking to get another three points this week. Regardless of the fact that they are out of playoff contention for 2020, the Switchbacks are determined to not finish last in the group. The only problem? Salt Lake City has that exact same goal in mind, and only being a single point behind the Switchbacks in Group C, tonight's match could provide a crucial win for either team.
Starting in the first half, the Switchbacks put the pressure on the Monarchs when an early free-kick scoring opportunity was awarded to the home team; however, this pressure was alleviated from a missed opportunity on the kick which echoed a pattern that was seen throughout the match by both teams. The defense is able to take possession, the offense pushes towards the opposing goal, but nothing is able to connect to the back of the net until the 21st minute when Salt Lake City's Bode Davis is able to finish a corner kick opportunity with a point after the initial shot by Dayonn Harriss (SLC) was blocked by his teammate, Sam Brown. Continuing into the latter of the first half, the match diverges into a game of pong. The ball goes back and forth, in and out of possession by both teams, with no team seeming to come out on top after each attack. However, in the 41st minute, the Monarchs foul Luke Ferreira in their box and awarded the Switchbacks a penalty kick which was taken, and scored, by Christian Volesky. The first half ends, and the score is 1-1.
Going into the second half, the crowd is pumped, cheering on the Switchbacks, as they try and obtain a second win in a row for the 2020 season. Switchbacks players such as Gabe Robinson, Rony Argueta, and Jordan Burt, who kept loading on consistent pressure in the backline. The young keeper, Abraham Rodriguez, was also out in full force with save after save, and the main goal of… well… not giving up goals. However, regardless of the saves by each team's keeper, the constant pushes on the offensive, and multiple substitutions, even up to the last few minutes of the match, neither team was able to create a successful opportunity to get another point on the board ending this match in a 1-1 draw.
The Switchbacks return to Weidner Field on Wednesday, September 30th for the final home game of the 2020 regular season, and the final home game at the current Weidner Field before the club moves into the Downtown Stadium. Gates will be opening at 6pm with kickoff set for 7pm in the game presented by Pikes Peak National Bank. All home matches in 2020 at Weidner Field will be available for Switchbacks Season Ticket Members only.

Post Game Quotes
Alan Koch
On keeping the team motivated to finish the 2020 season strong:
"Every game counts. I don't care if it's game one or it's the last game of the season…. When you step on the pitch, we're paying for our club. We're paying for our city. We're playing for individual pride, our family's pride, our team pride…. Those are the expectations that we expect from every player."
Overall thoughts on the match:
"Tonight is one of those games. It's a draw that feels like a loss, to be honest. There [are] some draws that feel like wins [,but], as far as I'm concerned, what we're trying to build, where we're trying to go, I'm not very satisfied. We need to push the envelope a little bit more. We [have] two games to do that."
Abe Rodriguez
Overall thoughts on the match:
"The first goal they scored, we were down. For [us], it just motivated the team. Try to push them to come back and we did. I thought we could've gotten the win. Unfortunately, we didn't. If we all worked together, it would've been a better result."
On personal goals for the remainder of the season
"Goalkeeper wise, going into these next two games, [I want] two shut-outs. That's my goal and has always been my goal. I also want to work on leadership. I am a young goalkeeper, but I want to work on that, and, if I do this well, I think we'll get two shut-outs."
Jordan Burt
Overall thoughts on the match:
"Honestly, [I'm] a little disappointed tonight. We had better players. We could've created a lot more changes, ad we just didn't take them. So, I'm a little disappointed, but…. onward and upward.
Thoughts on how the team can improve:
"When you play a team like the Monarchs, they're good at keeping the ball. I thought we were stretched the whole night from top to bottom. It gives them a lot of space to make plays. So just, a little bit of organization, a little bit of intensity, and a little bit of effort would've gone a long way and I think the result would've been different."

Vargish's View: Colorado Springs Switchbacks Looking to Keep Momentum Rolling Against Defending Champs

The Rocky Mountain Rivalry returns to Weidner Field on Saturday as the Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC host the Real Monarchs SLC in a match presented by Sheath and AMPRO Insurance.
Last weekend the Switchbacks notched a deserved win against high-flying New Mexico United, courtesy of a stunning 48th minute strike from Luke Ferreira. “It felt great,” said Ferreira when asked about his goal. “For the most part we’ve been put in situations where we usually concede first – like we did in this last game – so to get a goal to put us ahead was nice. I put the team up, but it was only around the 50th minute so there was still a lot of work to be done in that game. I helped, but the boys went out and finished the job for everybody.”
“It was the winning goal, which is huge,” said Switchbacks Head Coach Alan Koch. “It was awesome and I’m very happy for Luke. But it’s also a little bit of a reward for our entire group in terms of what we’ve been trying to do in training and how we’re asking the guys to play. It’s a nice little reward to see the quality pass from Rony [Argueta] and a little bit of one-on-one qualitative skill from Aidan [Daniels] and then Luke having the presence to call him off and finish it. I was very happy for Luke, happy for the team with how the goal came about; but then of course to show the strength of character to, at times, grind it out and get the three points was a very positive day for all of us.”

Colorado Rapids Academy product Abe Rodriguez started in goal for the Switchbacks last weekend in the win over New Mexico United. “It meant a lot to win last Saturday,” said the 18-year-old shot-stopper. “We’re playing for our pride. It was a great win and it gives us momentum and we’re looking forward to getting another win on Saturday. From my angle, Luke’s goal was awesome – seeing that ball go in, I got excited as well and jumped up a few times. It was a great goal. It’s going to take everyone to get a result against the Monarchs, just like we did this past Saturday. We’ll continue to work together, play for each other, and I think if we do that we can get another win. This week is going to give us more time to prepare and focus. We’ve conceded a few goals when we’ve played them – we just need to make sure our defense is strong, solid and we all work together.”
2020 has been a difficult season for the reigning USL Championship winners, Real Monarchs SLC, who currently sit bottom of Group C. The Monarchs have dropped their past 3 matches, including a narrow 1-0 defeat in border country against the El Paso Locomotive on Saturday evening.
The Monarchs’ last win came on September 9th against the Switchbacks in Herriman, Utah. Saturday’s opponents played back-to-back matches in the USL Championship in mid-July, with the Real Monarchs emerging 2-1 winners at Weidner Field two weeks after the teams finished deadlocked 3-3 at Rio Tinto Stadium in Sandy, Utah.

“We have three more days this week to prepare, and we’ll focus on both sides of the ball,” said Koch on Tuesday evening. “We focus on ourselves and on the opposition and we focus on both in and out of possession. We know it’s going to be a tough game – they’re a team that’s very much like us. They’re a team that are a couple moments away from having turned some of the losses to wins, and we feel like we’re in a very similar boat to them, so we know it’s going to be a tough challenge. The Monarchs have a lot of quality players and they’re going to be just as hungry as we are to get three points. We’re a very small group and with the limited movement because of the pandemic that can happen between the Rapids academy coming up and the Rapids first team coming down, what we have is what we have. We’re having to make the most of it but the positive byproduct of a small squad is that the players within the squad get opportunities, and they need to embrace those opportunities.”
“The Monarchs like to possess the ball, but we also like to have possession,” said Luke Ferreira. “It’s just managing their style and their wing-backs that they usually like to play with – it’s managing that threat they possess and to try to capitalize on their movement on the wings. There’s going to be opportunities in the midfield and in the channels so we have to take advantage of those moments. Football is about moments: they’re going to have their moments because we have weaknesses and they’re going to have their weaknesses, and the team that capitalizes the most is the one that’s going to win on Saturday.”

We know how the Monarchs play so we have to go out and do a job and do what Coach has planned for us and perform. We can’t have any moments where we let out guard down or lose focus so we give the Monarchs any opportunities to capitalize. Saturday is about going out, being sharp and focused and taking advantage of this win we just got against a really good team and use this confidence to go forward and show what we can do and show everyone that we can compete.”
The Switchbacks will conclude their 2020 home slate next Wednesday as the El Paso Locomotive visit Weidner Field in a match presented by Pikes Peak National Bank.
