Open Cup Round One Match Preview:
Tormenta FC 2 vs Chattanooga Red Wolves SC
Statesboro, GA- Tormenta FC 2 will go up against USL League One’s Chattanooga Red Wolves FC on May 7th at 8 PM in Statesboro. This will be a tough matchup for the League Two side who reported to camp mere days before the First Round of the Open Cup, but the squad is hungry and looking to pose a challenge.
The winner of this draw will face USL Championship squad Nashville SC on May 14th in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.
What To Watch For:
Future Household Names: Tormenta FC 2’s roster is filled with current college players and recent graduates, all following their dreams of playing professional football. There are several names to keep an eye on throughout the season, and we get our first glimpse on May 7th. Three players to watch:
Luca Mayr is from Steyr, Austria and a recent graduate of the University of South Carolina. Mayr has previous experience with SV Ried, an Austrian professional club in the Erste Liga and made 19 appearances for Austria’s Youth National Team, scoring 4 goals. He also managed to score against Tormenta FC’s League One side in a preseason matchup against USC.
Jordan Skelton will help bolster the Tormenta 2 defense with his skills at center-back. Skelton is from Newcastle, England and played collegiately at Lander University in Greenwood, South Carolina. Skelton received PDL Defender of the Year honors and appeared on the PDL All-League Team last year while playing for Mississippi Brilla. Keep an eye on Skelton as he will likely be a consistent name on the Tormenta 2 back line.
Another player who will strengthen Tormenta FC 2’s backline is Curtis Thorn. Thorn is a Nova Southeastern masters student who attended Solent University in his hometown of Southampton, England. On top of his time at Solent University, Thorn spent three years playing with Fulham FC’s youth squad. Adding to his useful international experience, Thorn played for NPSL side New Orleans Jesters where he was named Team MVP last season.
Development of a Team Identity: Tormenta 2 plays their US Open Cup match just six days after reporting for training. With only two returning players from last year’s squad, Tormenta Nation has little clue to what starting eleven Coach Ian Cameron will name for the Open Cup match. For many fans, that can be alarming. Tormenta 2’s first preview will be going up against a team with six matches under their belt. Seeing the team come together quickly will be exciting for fans and a major learning experience for all players.
