Birmingham Legion FC vs FC Tulsa
Saturday, August 7 – 7:00PM CT Kickoff
ONEOK Field – Tulsa, OK
Watch – My68, ESPN+
Stats – Legion FC Match Center
Birmingham heads to Tulsa, Oklahoma for the first time ever looking for a big in-division win to keep pace with Louisville City FC at the top of the Central Division and to extend its lead over third-place FC Tulsa. Travelling on short rest after a midweek win over Atlanta United 2, Head Coach Tommy Soehn’s rotations will be key in helping his squad stay fresh while also trying to keep the mini hot streak going, after scoring twice on Saturday, July 31 and thrice for the first time this season on Wednesday, August 4.
A big part of the goal scoring boost came from forward Junior Flemmings, who got his first two goals of the season in his past two matches. When asked about his first two goals for the club, Flemmings said, “To be honest I think it was confidence. Coming into the season and after the game against San Antonio [on May 22nd], I got hurt. That was a big setback…that 3-4 game span I was playing with a hamstring injury and struggling to get back to full fitness. I think as I get closer to that you start to see that I’m playing better, and I feel a lot more comfortable and that’s what’s happening now.”
Forward JJ Williams was equally dangerous last match, bagging his second goal of the year, as well as his third assist, while moving into the team lead for shots on the season with 28. Strike partner Neco Brett still leads the way in goals scored with nine, which is tied for second in USL Championship, while right back Jonny Dean is tops on the team in assists after sending in his fourth of the year on Wednesday.
After settling in to a back four formation in recent matches, center back pair Phanuel Kavita and Alex Crognale, are top two on the team in clearances with 45 and 42, respectively, while left back Ryan James is first in interceptions with 39 and midfielder Anderson Asiedu leads the way in tackles with 34.
Tulsa comes into the match on a bit of a slide recently, having lost four matches in a row. The team remains dangerous, as they are tied for 13th in the league in goals scored this year with 22, and its last win was a 3-2 victory over division leaders LouCity, but TUL has also given up the seventh most goals in the league this year at 28.
Forward Rodrigo da Costa is the real talisman in the attack, as he leads the team in goals scored with eight, which is tied for fourth in the USLC, is first on the team in assists with four, and is tops in chances created with 29, while his 19 shots are third in the side behind Marlon’s 21 and Dario Suarez’s 20.
Legion FC has no changes on this week’s VIVA Health injury report, as midfielder Daigo Kobayashi is questionable with a knee issue, and midfielder Bruno Lapa is out due to a sports hernia. Defender Freddy Kleemann has been recalled from loan by Austin FC.
