The Three Sparks will be back at BBVA Field again on Wednesday, August 4, at 7:00PM, and Everybody Wins on Wednesdays with Legion FC! Join us downtown for one-dollar hotdogs, two-dollar beers, and a post-game firework show as the team takes on regional rival Atlanta United 2 for the second time inside a week. This game on Wednesday is the rescheduled contest that was rained out on June 30.
These two teams played to a 2-2 draw on Saturday, with Legion goals coming from substitute forward Junior Flemmings and forward Neco Brett. Legion FC won the first meeting this year in Atlanta on May 30th, thanks to a 93rd minute penalty from Bruno Lapa, and while Lapa remains out with a sports hernia, BHM got a boost in the attack with Flemmings return from international duty and his first goal of the season on Saturday.
Brett will continue to lead the line, as he is third in the USLC with nine goals now in 14 games. Head Coach Tommy Soehn will also continue to integrate new defender/midfielder Thomas Vancaeyezeele into the side, as well as midfielder Zach Herivaux as he returns from playing with Haiti. Defensively, the side has registered five clean sheets this season, tied for second-most in the league, led by captain Phanuel Kavita who has still played every minute all season and is first on the team in clearances, second in interceptions and fourth in tackles.
Atlanta United 2 comes back to Birmingham on short rest, fresh off a 2-1 home victory last Wednesday over FC Tulsa, thanks to goals from forward Amadou Diop and midfielder Ajani Fortune, and Saturday’s draw, thanks to goals from Aidan McFadden and Darwin Matheus, but as a team are still just 1-4-3 on the road in 2021. Roster turnover has been a big factor for the team, with 35 different players making gameday rosters this year, as compared to Legion’s 24, so the game day roster could have some fresh faces on it from the weekend for the visitors.
McFadden leads ATL in goals (six) and shots (22), midfielders Will Reilly and Robbie Mertz are first in assists (two), and Mertz leads the way in chances created (20). Four different goalkeepers have played, with Rocco Rios Novo at the top with 35 saves in nine games and a saved penalty versus Tulsa last week to preserve his team's lead.
Legion FC Head Coach Tommy Soehn said playing the same opponent after such a quick turnaround can affect preparation, but that he plans to focus on his team and its performance, as well as how it can improve. He said, “It’s a study week for us. Sometimes it’s going to be more about watching us and learning more about how we played [on Saturday] instead of the training aspect of it because it’s a short week.”
On this week’s VIVA Health injury report, Legion FC midfielder Daigo Kobayashi is questionable with a knee issue, and midfielder Bruno Lapa is out due to a sports hernia. Defender Freddy Kleemann has been recalled from loan by Austin FC.
