Legion FC return home after a two-game away run to play in front of the fans against San Antonio FC. Coming off an away loss against the Oakland Roots and a draw against Tampa Bay, the Three Sparks will look to bounce back in form with a win over San Antonio to propel its playoff run.
Legion FC face an extremely tight race for the 4th home playoff seed in the Eastern Conference, this second-to-last home game for the Three Sparks is crucial to win if they want to secure a home advantage in the first round of the USL Championship playoffs.
The Magic City has one of the most creative attacks in the Championship, with Enzo Martinez (14 goals & seven assists), Juan Agudelo and Prosper Kasim (seven goals & five assists each), and Marlon Santos (seven goals) making up the bulk of that attack. Their defense boasts 11 clean sheets, and goalkeeper Matt VanOekel has the fifth most saves in the Championship with 80 to his name.
San Antonio FC, Western Conference leaders, has the most points in the Championship (73). Naturally, they host the best record, as well, with 23 wins, four draws, and five losses, and are undefeated in their last six. FiveThirtyEight ranks them the most likely to win the USL Championship Final this year, with a staggering 27% chance to do so.
Offensively, San Antonio’s 50 goals rank them eighth in the Championship in goals scored — Birmingham rank seventh with 52 goals. It’s San Antonio’s defense, however, that drastically outdoes everyone in the League and is the main credit for its season-long dominance. League-wide, they boast the most clean sheets (17 in 32 games) and have conceded the fewest number of goals (23).
With that being said, fans can expect a strong Birmingham attack facing up against, arguably, the best defense in the Championship. If Legion FC are able to break San Antonio down and find chances, it’s a good look for its offensive potential moving forward into the USL Championship playoffs.
For this week’s UAB Medicine Injury Report, defender Freddy Kleemann is again the only person on the list, as he is still out due to a torn ACL.
