BIRMINGHAM, AL (Aug. 18, 2020) — The 2020 USL Championship season is at the midway point, at least for Legion FC, and the club has had an ideal league campaign thus far. The Black and Gold currently sit at the top of Group G with 17 points earned after eight games, on a record of five wins, one loss and two draws. BHM’s has scored 14 goals and conceded only five, bringing the club’s goal differential to nine, good for third best in the entire USL Championship. Additionally, six Legion FC players have earned USL Championship Team of the Week honors in just five weeks since the restart (defenders Jonathan Dean and Alex Crognale, midfielders Bruno Lapa and Eli Crognale, and forwards Brian Wright and Neco Brett).
Eight points behind Birmingham, and in second place in Group G, sits the Charlotte Independence. The Independence have earned nine points thus far, but have played two matches less than Legion FC. Like Birmingham, Charlotte has only lost one match this season, 4-1 to BHM on August 5, with most of their dropped points resulting from the three draws they have tallied so far. Dane Kelly, the USL Championship’s All-Time leading goalscorer, leads his side in scoring with four goals.
North Carolina FC is third in Group G with seven points earned after five matches. NCFC handed BHM its only loss of the season so far, beating Tom Soehn’s side 1-0 back on August 1. Similar to Legion FC, North Carolina FC has had players earn USL TOTW honors, namely former Legion FC defender Akeem Ward and goalkeeper Alex Tambakis. Both players joined current Legion FC players Jonny Dean and Neco Brett on the USL Championship’s Team of the Week for Week 7, while Tambakis made the bench. Dave Sarachan’s side has shown glimpses of its quality, and with three games in hand, if they can withstand a condensed schedule the next six weeks, expect them to push for top two in Group G.
Memphis 901 FC sits last in Group G after earning only five points in seven matches. Memphis kicked off its return to play with a 3-0 loss to the Black and Gold at BBVA Field. The club’s only win so far this season came in the form of a 1-0 result against St. Louis FC, with forward Keanu Marsh-Brown scoring the winning goal. It’s going to take a lot for 901 FC to turn things around, and after failing to earn even a point after taking a 2-0 lead over Charlotte at the weekend, each match continues to grow more vital if Tim Howard & Co. have playoff aspirations in 2020.
