Birmingham Legion FC at Louisville City FC
Saturday, May 8 – 6:30PM CT Kickoff – Lynn Family Stadium, Louisville, KY
Watch – My 68, ESPN+
Birmingham kicked off its third season in the USLC last weekend with a 1-0 loss at home versus Indy Eleven, and will look to rebound on the club’s first road trip of 2021, at LouCity. Forward JJ Williams led the team in shots (3) before getting a late red card, and defender Jonny Dean paced the side with two chances created. With Williams and 2020 USL Golden Boot winner Junior Flemmings both out due to suspension, Legion will look to lean on 2020 All-League first teamer Bruno Lapa and 2019 All-League Second Teamer Neco Brett in the attack.
Louisville won its first match of 2021, 2-0 at home vs. Atlanta United 2 on April 24, thanks to two goals from club captain Paulo Del Piccolo, but Head Coach John Hackworth parted ways with the club the week following. Former Assistant Coach Danny Cruz has stepped up in the interim, and will look to keep things rolling at the club that won the 2017 and 2018 USL Cups. Forward Cameron Lancaster finished third in the league in goals in 2020 (12) and first in shots (58), midfielder Corben Bone was third in chances created (51) and midfielder Antoine Hoppenot was fifth in the league in assists (7). LouCity’s two biggest losses this offseason were perennial All-League players Speedy Williams and Paco Craig, both to Miami FC.
In 2020, Louisville dominated group E, finishing 11-3-2 with 35 points, and made its sixth straight trip to the Eastern Conference Final before falling to Tampa Bay. The all-time record between BHM and LOU is 1-2-0 across all competitions, with all meetings coming in 2019. Legion FC's win over LouCity in 2019 doubles as the Black and Gold's first win in club history. While the squad making the trip up to Kentucky is vastly different from the one that did so in 2019, it will look to create the same magic.
Midfielder Zach Herivaux and defender Alex Crognale are on this week’s VIVA Health Injury Report, as Herivaux is out with an ankle injury and Crognale is out with a glute injury. Forwards Junior Flemmings and JJ Williams will be unavailable for the match, as Flemmings is serving the last games of his six game match ban incurred at the end of last season and Williams is serving his one-match suspension due to a red card in the season opener against Indy Eleven.
Legion FC travels to Louisville on Saturday, May 8, to take on Louisville City FC at 6:30PM CT. The match will air live on My68 and ESPN+, and follow us on Twitter @bhmlegion for live match updates.
