Birmingham Legion FC vs Atlanta United 2
Sunday, May 30 – 2:30 PM CT Kickoff
Fifth Third Bank Stadium – Kennesaw, Georgia
Watch – My68, ESPN+
Legion FC returns to action this Sunday, May 30, where they shift focus to another Central Division opponent in Atlanta United 2. The trip to Georgia will see the Black and Gold look to build off of their 1-0 win over fellow Central Division rival OKC Energy FC.
Birmingham fans were treated to a fun-filled night at BBVA Field on Wednesday, as a post-game fireworks show capped off BHM’s 1-0 victory over OKC. Midfielder Bruno Lapa scored the lone goal of the night, as the Brazilian finished a well-worked team goal in the second half to help his side collect all three points.
Lapa led the way going forward, creating two chances and firing off five shots on goal in addition to finding the back of the net. Defender Jonny Dean played the initial ball into the OKC box, where forward JJ Williams left it for Lapa to run onto and score. The Black and Gold got the job done on the defensive end as well, recording their second clean sheet of the season.
Birmingham head coach Tommy Soehn deployed defenders Ryan James and Johnny Dean as wing backs, allowing them the ability to take advantage of the space out wide to make runs going forward and utilize their crossing abilities. Both James and Dean have contributed three key passes and tallied one assist this season, and with prolific scorers like Neco Brett and Junior Flemings waiting on the end of those crosses, expect them to continue to threaten opposing defenses.
BHM defender and captain Phanuel Kavita has continued his excellent run of form to start the season. Kavita currently has the highest passing accuracy on the team at 86%, and also ranks seventh in the USL Championship with 282 completed passes this season. Defender Alex Crognale’s return from injury is a welcome sight, as he will hope to rejoin Kavita to bolster an already commanding backline that will look to stifle an Atlanta United 2 team that has shown they can finish chances well.
Atlanta comes into this matchup 3rd in the USLC with 10 goals scored this season and unbeaten in their last four games, a run that includes a 5-0 win over Central Division leaders FC Tulsa. Midfielder Aiden McFadden has scored four of their last seven goals, earning him USLC Player of the Week honors for Week 5. Forward Matias Benitez is another player to watch out for, as the young Argentinian creates a team-high two key chances per match with a 73% dribble success rate. While Atlanta United 2 may have a young squad consisting of many academy products, expect them to be organized and pass the ball well throughout the contest.
Legion FC will hope to grow on their recent victory against a difficult Atlanta United 2 side, as both fight for the top spot in the central division this Sunday.
Midfielders Mikey Lopez and Prosper Kasim are still recovering from injuries and are on this week’s VIVA Health Injury Report.
Legion FC will return to BBVA Field on Sunday, June 6 at 4:00 pm against FC Tulsa. Tickets are available HERE or by contacting the Legion FC Ticket Office at 205-600-4635 or tickets@https://sportsengine-staging.go-vip.net/bhmlegion.
