Birmingham Legion FC at Miami FC
Wednesday, June 23 – 7:00 PM CT Kickoff
FIU Stadium – Miami, Florida
Watch – ESPN Deportes, My68, ESPN+
Birmingham Legion FC hits the road to take on Miami FC in what will be only the second meeting between the two sides. The match will air nationally on ESPN Deportes, with a local stream still available on My68. Additionally, the match can be viewed on ESPN+.
Legion FC heads to South Beach on short rest after playing at OKC Energy FC on Saturday, June 12, at Louisville City FC on Wednesday, June 16, and playing 37 minutes of the match at home this past Saturday against Austin Bold FC before it was cancelled due to weather. In the 37 minutes played, Legion FC forward Neco Brett managed to capitalize on an error by the Bold goalkeeper to fire his side into the lead. The goal would have brought Brett’s goal tally for the season to seven, a league best. However, the goal was wiped off the board due to the abandoned game.
Brett will try to stay hot, though, and will be joined in the attack by midfielder Bruno Lapa, who’s tied for 11th in the USLC in shots and tied for 10th in chances created, and forwards JJ Williams and Junior Flemmings. Williams earned a spot on USLC TOTW for Week 8 following a one-goal, one-assist performance at OKC, and Flemmings has a couple assists on the season but is still looking for his first goal with BHM. Goalkeeper Matt VanOekel will lead from the back, as he is currently second in the USL Championship with 30 saves and tied for first in clean sheets with three.
Miami comes into tomorrow’s contest looking to make a return to the winner’s circle, as they most recently dropped points against the Charleston Battery in a 2-1 defeat, and have lost twice and drawn once in its last three matches. To do so, they will need an improved performance from when these two teams met last season, as Legion left Florida with a 4-0 win thanks to braces by Brett and Alex Crognale. Miami has an improved roster this season, with big additions like defender Paco Craig and midfielder Speedy Williams, who both made All-League First Team’s in the last couple years, and midfielder Bolu Akinyode, who played with BHM last season.
Miami FC has multiple goal scoring threats, with eight of its 10 goals scored this season coming from eight different goal scorers (the remaining two are opponent own goals). Forward Ariel Martinez is the creative hub, leading the team in assists (2) and chances created (9), while forward Pierre da Silva is tops in shots (10). The team also likes to play physically, as it is fourth in the league in yellow cards with 24, exactly twice as many as BHM.
With both sides looking to return to the win column, expect a hotly contested match at FIU Stadium.
No one is on the Legion FC VIVA Health Injury report this week, so defender Freddy Kleemann is the only player unavailable for selection, as he has been recalled from loan by Austin FC.
Legion FC will return to BBVA Field on Wednesday, June 30 at 7:00 PM to face Atlanta United 2, and Everybody Wins on Wednesdays with Legion FC!
