Birmingham Legion FC prepares to return to Protective Stadium for Wednesday’s fixture against Loudoun United looking to bounce back and give the fans at home a win. The game serves as another edition of ‘White Claw Wednesday’ where fans can enjoy drinks specials, like discounted Miller Lites, White Claws, and TrimTab beers, in the South Terrace from gates at 6:00pm until the 15th minute of the game.
The Three Sparks took a tough loss at home 2-0 against Tulsa FC last Saturday night. BHM played well in the first half, dominating possession (59.3%) and shots (14 shots to Tulsa’s five) but could not capitalize. In the second half, Ryan James received a second yellow card that shifted the pace of the match in Tulsa’s favor. The red card against Ryan James has since been unanimously rescinded by the Independent Review Panel after being successfully appealed by Legion FC, allowing Ryan James to play in Wednesday’s game.
Legion players like Enzo Martinez, who leads the team in goals (six), assists (four), shots (30), and chances created (42), and Prosper Kasim (four goals, three assists) will be key threats to Loudoun’s backline. Goalkeeper Matt VanOekel will look to kick-start another shutout streak, flanked by the likes of James, team captain Phanuel Kavita, and his center back partner Alex Crognale, who leads the team in clearances (73) and interceptions (27).
Loudoun United come to Birmingham on a four-match winless streak. They have managed to score in each of their last four, but defensively have had trouble keeping out opposing goals — conceding 11 in those four games.
Loudoun’s attack leans on the duo of Tyler Freeman and Abdellatif Boukoura. Together they have scored a combined nine goals, with Aboukoura scoring four in just seven appearances. On the defensive end of play, Jacob Greene will arguably be the toughest challenge in trying to build up play. The defender gets stuck in, having engaged in 163 duels while winning 77.
For this week’s UAB Medicine Injury Report, defender Jake Rufe is out due to a lower body injury and defender Freddy Kleemann is out due to a torn ACL.
