After a series of matches away in the league, Legion FC returns home to Protective Stadium on Sunday, April 30 to host the Hartford Athletic.
Hartford is the first team Birmingham will face twice in 2023, and on March 25 at Trinity Health Stadium Birmingham triumphed over the Connecticut side thanks to a loan goal by Legion defender Gabi Alves, his first as a pro. Alves, USL Team of the Week nominee for Week 5, has been a crucial offensive asset for the Three Sparks, causing problems for opponents down the left channel.
Legion’s Front Big Four of Neco Brett, Tyler Pasher, Enzo Martinez, and Juan Agudelo, paired with the fact that ten different players have already registered an assist for the team this season, Legion FC is a deep squad offensively. The team is fifth in the league in goals (10) with the aforementioned quartet combining for seven goals in seven matches played.
The Black & Gold come into Sunday’s contest fresh off of an away win against Orange County SC on April 22 and a win against Chattanooga FC in the U.S. Open Cup on April 26. Legion FC goalkeeper Trevor Spangenberg has been clutch, playing well in a string of starts to begin this season, and capped that recent run off with a game-saving penalty stop in the Open Cup match midweek.

Hartford Athletic: 1W – 3L – 2D / 9 Goals Scored – 12 Goals Allowed / 5 Points / 9th in USLC Eastern Conference
The visitors come into Birmingham still looking for firm ground from which to kick off their 2023 campaign. In Hartford’s last league match, the Athletic won 2-1 at Oakland for its first win of the season, and then lost a tough match to MLS side New England Revolution 2-1 on Tuesday, April 25 in the Open Cup.
Prince Saydee is the leading attacking outlet for Hartford, with four goals and one assist in six appearances. Saydee spearheads a strong attack, as HFD’s nine goals this year are good for a tie for eighth in the league, but the club has been a bit leaky at the back, giving up a joint league-high 12 goals in just six matches played.
All-Time Head-to-Head:
