BIRMINGHAM (Sept. 28, 2023) – Birmingham Legion FC midfielder Matthew Corcoran has been called up to the U.S. Under-17 Men’s Youth National Team for its upcoming training camp from September 29 to October 8 in preparation for upcoming friendlies in Sorocaba, Brazil.
The invitation is Corcoran’s first national team selection. The United States will play Brazil on Wednesday, October 4 before a second game on Friday, October 6.
“I’m very happy for this opportunity and excited for the challenge, tough to leave the team at this time but I know the boys are going to get the job done,” said Corcoran. “I am very honored for what’s ahead.”
Corcoran will depart for duty Friday and is anticipated to be out for Legion’s upcoming games against Memphis 901 FC on September 30 and Monterey Bay F.C. on October 8. The 17-year-old could return for Birmingham’s final regular season game against Charleston Battery on October 14.
“Matthew is a dynamic young player and he continues to improve every time on the field,” said Legion FC President and GM Jay Heaps. “We know he’ll make an impact with the U.S. YNT team and we’re excited for him.”
Corcoran made his debut for Birmingham Legion in the 2022 season after signing professionally with the club from the FC Dallas Academy. In his first season with the club, Corcoran made 11 appearances, 106 passes, and maintained a passing accuracy of 86.8%. This season, the 17-year-old recorded one goal and three assists in 1,803 minutes, making 21 starts in the 28 appearances.
Before joining Legion, Corcoran played with the Dallas Texans before signing for the FC Dallas Academy, where he helped the under-15’s win the FC Bayern Adidas Campus Cup in Munich, Germany in 2019 and the Dallas Cup in 2021. The Texan then made his professional debut in April 2021 with USL League One side North Texas SC.
