The Charleston Battery announced Tuesday the signing of goalkeeper Hugo Fauroux to the 2022 roster, pending league and federation approval. Fauroux adds to the Battery’s goalkeeping corps after a successful trial which included two appearances in the 2022 Breeze Airways™ Carolina Challenge Cup.
“I’m so excited to join this historic organization and represent this beautiful city,” said Fauroux. “Playing with the guys has been really good so far. It was a great experience to play in the CCC against MLS clubs and it showed that we can compete with any team.”
A native of Cannes, France, the 25-year-old spent the 2021 season with Austin Bold FC, making five appearances in the USL Championship with the capital club. Before joining Austin, Fauroux made his professional debut with Norwegian side Valdres FK in 2019, featuring in eight games.
Battery Goalkeeper Coach Brian Jones has liked what he’s seen from Fauroux, over the past few years and through the 2022 preseason.
“Hugo has tremendous qualities for the position: really good instincts, his timing is sound and he’s brave,” said Jones. “He’s athletic, his distribution is excellent and he’s great with his feet. Every week that goes by, Hugo gets a little sharper and more consistent, so he’s a good keeper for us to have.”
Fauroux’s playing career started at the youth level with his hometown club, AS Cannes (U17), before moving to the academy of French giants AS Monaco (U19).
The shot-stopper made the move Stateside to play at Lake Erie College in 2015, where he was named GLIAC Goalkeeper of the Year after a strong 2016 campaign. Fauroux then transferred to Florida International University in 2017 and he garnered all-conference honors in his first season. He rejoins former FIU teammate Andrew Booth in Charleston after the two shared the pitch for the Panthers from 2017 to 2018.
Fauroux has also previously competed with FC Miami City of the USL League Two (2018) and the Palm Beach Stars of the United Premier Soccer League (2020).
Hugo is looking forward to seeing the home fans again following the preseason, starting with the Home Opener on March 12.
“I can’t wait to start the season and play in front of our fans, I’ve always seen the Battery as a club with great fans, and I can’t wait to feel the atmosphere at Patriots Point again,” said Fauroux.
The addition of Fauroux brings the squad size to 21 players. He will wear number 30 for the Battery.
