The USL Championship announced Tuesday that Charleston Battery midfielder Juan David Torres and forward Nick Markanich were named to the league’s Week 23 Team of the Week.
It’s the second consecutive week the pair have found themselves on the Team of the Week after claiming the honors after Week 22.
Torres tallied one goal and one assist in the Battery’s 3-1 win over Memphis. The Colombian winger assisted Markanich with a brilliant long ball and his goal was a brilliant strike from distance to cap off the night. Additionally, Torres recorded three chances created, two successful dribbles, five duels won, one interception and an 82% passing accuracy.
Markanich also notched a one-goal, one-assist performance, doing so in less than an hour of work. Markanich’s goal was a showcase of his technical prowess in receiving Torres’ pass with his chest and then striking the ball off the volley with his next touch. His assist on MD Myers’ goal was a crucial one as it helped restore Charleston’s lead. Markanich also tallied four recoveries, five duels won and one tackle won.
The selections are the second and eighth for Torres and Markanich, respectively. They also bring the Battery’s total of Team of the Week sections to 26.
The Battery hit the road next week to face Louisville City FC on Sat., Aug. 17. Charleston return home on Sat., Aug. 24 to host Orange County SC for Back to School Night at Patriots Point. Tickets for the game are on sale now via SeatGeek.com, the club’s exclusive digital ticketing provider.
