Charleston Battery forward Nick Markanich accomplished another milestone in his historic 2024 campaign on October 5 against Detroit City FC. He set the new Battery record for the most overall goals scored in a single season (all competitions) with his 28th goal of the year, breaking the previous record held by Paul Conway’s tally of 27 in 2001.
At the end of the weekend, Markanich is the top goalscorer across all American professional domestic leagues (USL, MLS, NISA).
History was made in the 73rd minute when Markanich scored goal No. 28 to officially break the club record that had been standing for 23 years. Markanich did the honors from the penalty spot, converting after Juan David Torres was fouled inside the box moments before. Markanich confidently buried the attempt, sending goalkeeper Nathan Steinwascher the wrong way.
The 28 goals also extend to Markanich’s single-season USL Championship scoring record, which he set last match, on September 21 against the Tampa Bay Rowdies.
Three regular season matches plus the playoffs remain in the 2024 schedule for Markanich to add to both records.
