Chester (PA) — The Charlotte Independence professional soccer team overcame adversity in a 2-1 road victory over Bethlehem Steel FC on Sunday night. Reduced down to 10-men in the 31st minute, the Independence's second half surge culminated in defender Hugh Robert's game-winning headed goal.
In an eventful first 45 minutes, the Independence struck early when Enzo Martinez's in-swinging corner kick connected with Aaron Maund. The score marked Maund's second headed goal of the season and Martinez's team-high eighth of the season.
However, Bethlehem would equalize in the 14th minute as Faris Pemi Moumbagna converted a penalty to even the score at the halftime break.
Even with one less player, the Independence managed to out-shoot Bethlehem in the second half. In the 67th minute, Independence defender Abdoulie Mansally perfectly placed a 35-yard free kick right towards Hugh Roberts who's headed shot beat the Bethlehem goalkeeper for the game-winning score.
The Independence will hit the road for the penultimate regular-season match versus Memphis 901 FC next Saturday, October 12th. The official watch party will be held at Jack's House Soccer Back and Event Space with kickoff scheduled for 8:00 PM ET. The Independence will return home for the final regular season home game on Saturday, October 19th for Kick Breast Cancer Night presented by Novant Health.
