Charlotte (NC) — On Thursday, the Charlotte Independence professional soccer team announced midfielder Alex Martinez will not return for the 2020 season. Since the inaugural season, Martinez represented his hometown club as a true professional with immense passion and a fierce love for club, community and family. On behalf of the youth players, club staff, ownership and the countless fans that he inspired, the Charlotte Independence thanks Alex for his relentless commitment and loyalty to the club.
“To the fans, I just want to say thank you so much for the immense support and love that you’ve shown me the last five years,” said Martinez. “You made me stronger, you gave me so much love, always supported me and always backed me up every time. All I can say is thank you so much for all the love and the support. You will forever be in my heart.”
Over five USL Championship seasons, Martinez racked up 116 appearances, 10 goals and 16 assists. He was a part of the inaugural roster, which shaped the team culture for years to come. Moreover, the Montevideo, Uruguay native never forgot about his local, Rock Hill ties and proudly transcended his playing ability in order to coach at the youth level, for the same club where he played as a kid.
The Charlotte Independence will open the 2020 USL Championship season at Sporting Kansas City II on Sunday, March 8th. The Independence will open the 2020 home schedule the following weekend on Saturday, March 14th against Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC at the Sportsplex at Matthews.
