April 15, 2021 (CHARLOTTE, N.C.) — Professional soccer will be making its return to Charlotte this summer as the Charlotte Independence are set to make the 2021 campaign its first season at the brand new American Legion Memorial Stadium. The club today announced its promotional schedule for the inaugural season.
“We’re excited about our new home and thrilled to bring these promotions and charitable initiatives to our fans and community,” said team President & COO, Tim Schuldt. “This season we’ll focus on great soccer, one-of-a-kind promotions, and giving back to our community. We’ll have two special jerseys, one complete special kit, and multiple fundraising initiatives with our players. It promises to be a special and memorable inaugural season at American Legion Memorial Stadium.”
The Independence have multiple promotions to look forward to, starting with Grand Opening Night at American Legion Memorial Stadium presented by Chick-fil-A (July 7 vs. New York Red Bulls II). Next up will be Military Appreciation Night presented by Famous Toastery (July 17 vs. New York Red Bulls II). Following the salute to our veterans, the Jacks’ will celebrate Pride Night (Aug. 14 vs. Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC).
Novant Health partners with the team on Aug. 21 vs. Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC as fans can join the team in thanking our area’s front-line workers.
In a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, fans will enjoy Throwback Night on Sept. 18 vs. Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC featuring the 40th Anniversary of the Carolina Lightnin' ASL Championship and an induction ceremony for the 2021 Class of North Carolina Soccer Hall of Fame. This night of historic celebration will be presented by Complete Construction Services. Novant Health again will partner with the Independence to pay tribute to all who have battled breast cancer, during Breast Cancer Awareness Night on Oct. 16 vs. Charleston Battery.
The last game of the inaugural American Legion Memorial Stadium season will be Fan Appreciation Night on Oct. 27 vs. Loudoun United FC.
The team will be releasing more information and details on each promotion, unveiling the special jerseys and kit, and announcing a multitude of charitable initiatives as the season gets underway.
Due to weather-impacted construction delays at American Legion Memorial Stadium, the first three home matches of the 2021 campaign will now be played at the Sportsplex at Matthews.
In a statement to https://sportsengine-staging.go-vip.net/charlotteindependence, Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation said: “The completion of American Legion Memorial Stadium has been impacted by a particularly wet fall/winter. Wet site conditions have caused construction delays in multiple areas, particularly with the installation of utilities, which took much longer than anticipated. Recently, weather events have directly affected the completion of the stadium concourse, exterior finishes of the stadium buildings and the installation of the synthetic playing surface. Our construction team has worked diligently throughout the construction process to maintain the project schedule, as weather has allowed and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Current construction delays have adjusted our original completion date by several months. To ensure that all facility systems within the stadium are fully operational, we are estimating construction completion and opening of the stadium by July 3, 2021. We appreciate the patience of our residents, partners, supporters and look forward to hosting many sports and civic events at American Legion Memorial Stadium for many years to come.”
Located in Uptown Charlotte, the new venue will have a capacity of 10,500 including standing area, and the type of amenities that have become standard at new venues across the Championship in recent years. Among them, a first for the Independence, will be a full video scoreboard and views of the surrounding city skyline that will make for a memorable experience on game-nights and at other events
Independence supporters can purchase season tickets to the Jacks' historic inaugural USL Championship season at American Legion Memorial Stadium and guarantee the best seats for exciting matches against Atlantic Division and other USL Championship clubs. Due to limited availability, fans are encouraged to move quickly to ensure the chance to secure these seating options.
