LEESBURG, VA (August 6, 2021) – The Charlotte Independence ended tonight’s match vs. Loudoun United FC in a 0-0 draw at Segra Field after taking a total of 16 shots on the night. The team plays next at New York Red Bulls II on Tuesday, August 10. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 PM (ET). Watch on ESPN+.
The Jacks took 9 shots in the first half and it all started in the 6th minute with #29 Dane Kelly. He charged into the box, cut once and took the shot with his left foot. The attempt was saved by Loudoun Goalkeeper #0 Jermaine Fordah. Just minutes later, #19 Enzo Martinez got cheeky in the box, juggling the ball over a Loudoun defender. His shot was also saved.
“Tonight is a big learning lesson for us,” stated Charlotte Independence Captain, Enzo Martinez. “I take responsibility for tonight because the chances we created, we needed to put them away. The defense stepped up and kept a clean sheet which is positive. It was a game where we were up and down with a lot of transitions. Hopefully we learn from this game to make sure we are able to manage these situations better.”
An injury in the 31st minute led to a goalkeeper substitution bringing on #1 Austin Pack for #33 Brandon Miller. Both made big saves along with the back line which included #2 Kevin Riascos, #3 Hugh Roberts and #17 Clay Dimick to keep the Jacks in the game.
Just before halftime, #13 Brandt Bronico took off down the field on the counter attack off distribution from Pack. He found Kelly in the box, but again was unable to find the back of the net. The score remained tied at halftime: LDN 0 – CLT 0.
The Independence offense kept grinding away in the attacking third putting up multiple looks on goal. In the 55th minute, #10 Valentin Sabella took on his defender and found enough space to rocket a shot off from just inside the box. His strike was blocked and landed at the feet of Kelly who also took a hit, and his shot was saved by the keeper.
#9 Irvin Parra entered the match in the 63rd minute and got right to work. His first attempt came in the 71st minute with a left footed shot. His second, and a spectacular effort, came in the 85th minute off a cross from Dimick. He took the volley first-time and nicked it off the post.
With just four minutes to play in regulation, Loudoun won a free kick just outside the 18-yard box. The shot dipped over the wall and it was Pack who came up with the big save and punched it over the crossbar.
After all the action, the score remained tied at the final whistle: LDN 0 – CLT 0
“The glass half full is that we kept a clean sheet and created a lot of chances, but the flip side is that we needed to find a way to finish a lot of the opportunities especially early in the game,” stated Charlotte Independence Head Coach, Mike Jeffries. “I thought we had a number of good looks and a chance to maybe put a stamp on the game and weren’t able to do it. With a quick turnaround we’re going to try and take care of ourselves physically and then keep the positives in mind in terms of some of the things we did well in creating chances and defending with some intensity. I think that game we got caught and ended up playing more up and down than we necessarily wanted, but we found a way to keep a zero on their side.”
