AUSTIN, TX (October 30, 2021) – The Charlotte Independence concluded the regular season with a 1-1 draw vs. Austin Bold FC tonight at Bold Stadium. The Jacks secured the #2 seed in the Atlantic Division and will host a first round playoff match vs. Memphis 901 FC.
“I thought tonight we showed a lot of heart and character. We gave away a sloppy goal and pushed the game really hard to get back and try to get a win,” stated Charlotte Independence Head Coach, Mike Jeffries. “Throughout the stretch, and even from the beginning of the season, this is a team that fights for each other, competes together well and has shown a lot of heart and grit, and tonight was a good example of that.”
Austin Bold FC started the match with possession, but it was the Jacks who put the first strike on goal. #12 Adam Armour took the shot off a pass from #32 Gabriel Obertan, but the attempt missed wide.
Another promising attack from the Independence developed in the 11th minute of play when #19 Enzo Martinez played a ball across the top of the box to #9 Irvin Parra. Parra’s first-time shot was also sent wide.
A couple of big back to back defensive plays from #22 Christian Fuchs and #1 Austin Pack kept your Jacks in the game as they neared the 20 minute mark.
To close the half, it was Martinez, Obertan and Fuchs who launched shots on goal from distance, but none were able to find the back of the net. The score remained tied going into halftime: CLT 0 – ATX 0.
The Charlotte Independence put the early pressure on again to start the second half. This time it was Martinez whose strike dipped just over the crossbar and out of play for a goal kick.
On the opposite end of the pitch, the Jacks had some miscommunication in the back line that lead to an intercepted pass by Austin Bold FC and a goal for #13 Roberto Avila. Your Jacks trailed by one entering the 64th minute of play.
Charlotte escaped another close call in the 73rd minute. It was Avila again who found the ball in and around the six yard box. He took a couple touches, turned and his shot missed just wide.
With just less than 20 minutes to play, your Jacks continued to push forward into the attacking third. #56 Sylvain Marveaux gained possession in the 79th minute and played a pass out wide to Armour. Armour’s cross found Obertan driving into the box, and with a first-time finish, your Jacks tied the match up at one goal a piece.
Your Jacks took home one point on the night and secured home field advantage for the first round of the USL Championship Playoffs.
“It’s definitely an advantage to play on home turf,” explained #22 Christian Fuchs. “Nevertheless it is a game in which it is all or nothing and anything can happen. I am counting on the support of our fans. We will give everything, fight for every inch on the field and try to make it a positive evening for everybody.”
“We’re excited to be able to host and feel like it’s a big plus for us to be at Memorial. It’s a place where the guys have a lot of confidence and we feel like we have good support,” stated Jeffries. “We feel like we’re playing well and have been improving and playing at a higher level week in and week out. I think everyone’s looking forward to it. We’ll deal with it like we’ve dealt with everything this season, which is just focus on Memphis for next week and get ready for that game rather than looking at a bigger picture.”
NEXT ON THE SCHEDULE: The Charlotte Independence will host Memphis 901 FC for the first round of the playoffs at American Legion Memorial Stadium. More information will be released as it becomes available.
