What does it mean to be the first professional signing in Chattanooga Red Wolves SC’s history?
It means so much to me. Being able to represent Chattanooga at the professional level has always been something I have wanted to do, and now that dream is coming to fruition. It’s a surreal feeling.
What are you most looking forward to about being back in the Scenic City?
Like I said previously, representing Chattanooga at the pro level while also being back in the city I hold close to my heart is so exciting. I can’t wait to see the lads, former teammates and be back in the soccer community.
How would you describe your style of play?
I would describe my play style as aggressive and confident. I love to command my area while also providing forward support when and where I can. I also feel comfortable having the ball at my feet, which is massive in the game right now.
What age did you start playing soccer? When did you know it was what you wanted to pursue?
I think I was about seven or eight years old, but a soccer ball was always at my feet when I was younger. Once I joined Manchester City at the age of 10, I guess it was then when I realized I could do something with the sport.
Is there an iconic goalkeeper that you’ve looked up to throughout your career?
Peter Schmeichel, the Danish giant. As a Manchester United fan I would always watch him play. He was just an unbelievable Goalkeeper. His presence on the pitch and the fact he had no fear was so impressive.
How important is it to you to continue to develop and take your career to the next level?
I think it’s massive. If a player thinks that he/she has nothing to improve/develop on, no matter what age, then there is something wrong. One should always look for improvement. Making that step to the next level will help me in every aspect, and I can’t wait to get started.
What made a move back to Chattanooga the right one for you at this point of your career?
Looking back at my career, I feel as though I have had a good one. But I can’t help but look back to when I was pro at Man City. Deep down I know I didn’t fully grasp it and may have not given it everything I had. I was young and I figured I had already “made it.” Oh, how I was wrong. Many players rarely get a second chance at becoming a pro, but now the Chattanooga Red Wolves SC club has given me that second chance. I am eternally grateful for that. Plus, I love Chattanooga. It’s like a second home.
With 2019 being USL League One’s debut season, what are you most excited about? What are your expectations for the 2019 season?
The USL already has some great established teams in the league, including Louisville FC which a former teammate Niall McCabe plays for. The USL has been around for years and has a tremendous reputation. Being a part of an inaugural season in a new league with a new team opens up so much opportunity. I can’t wait to begin making a legacy with the new lads and building a foundation for years to come.
How are you prepping for your time here?
The prep is well underway. I’m currently still playing In the UK which keeps my match sharpness up. I’m also beginning a strict training regimen with a personal trainer here. He was a professional for many years and knows what we as players need.
Signing your first professional contract at the age of 18, how do you think you’ve grown since?
Like I mentioned, signing a contract so young may have gone to my head a little bit. However, I feel making the move to America, going to college and experiencing different levels of play have made me a better player. People say goalkeepers are in their prime in their late 20’s/early 30’s, and I totally agree. I feel I have grown so much as a player and plan to continue improving.
You’re arriving from Atherton Collieries A.F.C., where you’ve spent the past 2 seasons. What has your time with the Colls meant to you?
My time at Colls has been nothing short of great. Before I joined Colls, I really wasn’t enjoying football at all. Having to move back to the UK after being in the U.S. for so long really got to me. My head and heart were in the states, and that’s where I wanted to be. However, when I got the call from Cleggy (Colls Manager) I knew I had to take the opportunity. Once I got there it was instant love. It was like a family, and we were playing great football. I will always be thankful to Cleggy and the lads for helping me to find love for the sport again.
Pregame song?
Haha really I’m ashamed to say…but recently I’ve been listening to The Greatest Showman soundtrack. Best movie of 2018. Hands down.
Favorite Chattanooga restaurant?
This is tough. If you’ve been to Chattanooga or live there, you know this is the hardest question to answer. So it depends really, but for me breakfast will always be at Bluegrass Grill. For dinner it has to be Bluewater Grille.
Favorite historic soccer moment?
I think either winning the FA Youth Cup with Man City or becoming the Nike Premier World Champions when I was 15.
