Detroit City FC alum Danny Deakin has been selected by Orlando City SC as the No. 64 overall pick in the third round of today’s MLS SuperDraft.
Native of Sheffield, England, Deakin spent the 2016 season in Detroit. He started seven of nine matches played for Le Rouge, tallying one goal and three assists in 681 minutes played.
An attacking midfielder, Deakin played his last two seasons of collegiate soccer at University of South Carolina after transferring from Mercyhurst College.
In his senior season with the Gamecocks, Deakin featured in all 20 matches and led the team with 20 points (seven goals, six assists). His five game-winning goals ranked 13th in the nation.
Deakin was named First Team All-Conference USA for the second straight season and First Team All-Southeast Region in 2016.
A total of five DCFC alums have been drafted to MLS following their City careers, including Kofi Opare (selected 24th overall in 2013 by LA Galaxy), Adam Bedell (selected 45th overall in 2014 by Columbus Crew), Joey Dillon (selected 53rd overall in 2014 by Real Salt Lake), Fabio Pereira (selected 77th overall in 2014 by Seattle Sounders) and now Deakin.
