On Saturday, Locomotive came out on top against its regional rival, New Mexico United, for the first time in series history with a 3-2 scoreline. The Locomotive attacking front carved through the United backline, pulling key defenders out of position to create pockets of space to take advantage of.
Expertly finding and reading those spaces was none other than Dylan Mares. Working in tandem with Omar Salgado and Aaron Gomez ahead of him, Mares slipped through the middle with space, allowing him to contribute six of the 21 El Paso shots through the night. While four of his shots ended blocked by a rescuing New Mexico defender, Mares found one that counted, slipping away the late game-winning goal in the 88th minute.
Paired with his goal-scoring chances, Mares acted a playmaker, sending in three key passes to set up a chance towards goal, one of which led to the assist for Macca King in the first Locos goal. The performance on display by the Indiana native in recent weeks shows a strong run of form that makes him the Los Locos Player to Watch when San Antonio visits Southwest University Park on Saturday.
