It’s Friday afternoon and time for our very first mailbag. It has been an exciting two weeks for FC Tulsa from the launch of the new brand to season ticket pricing and now just wrapping up USL Winter Meetings in Orlando, FC Tulsa has been making waves around the league.
It is important to us as a club to continually stay in touch and connected to our fans. We think that fans voices ought to be heard, and we hope a regular mailbag, where you submit questions and we do our best to answer them, shows that commitment.
We appreciate all the questions submitted for our inaugural mailbag, and while we won’t be able to get to all of them, we have selected some that popped up frequently. If yours didn’t get answered this week, try again in our next mailbag.
Without further ado, let’s get to your questions.
When are you going to call season ticket holders to renew their season tickets – Linda
Hey Linda! We definitely love our season ticket holders, and we know many are ready to renew their season tickets, especially with the fan-friendly pricing we announced last week. Because of the field re-orientation and the different sightlines for each seat, we want to make sure that those who are renewing season tickets can find the seats and sections they want with the updated stadium layout.
All season ticket holders can expect an email or phone call in the next week from FC Tulsa to help with the the renewal process. We can assure you that 2019 season ticket members will be given the chance to renew their tickets prior to them going on sale to the general public.
Are you going to make more player announcements this week? – Jeff
Hey Jeff, thanks for writing in. You may have seen that we announced seven returning players this week running our 2020 roster total to nine players, all of whom are returning to the club from 2019. We heard the fans loud and clear that they wanted consistency on the field year-to-year and for FC Tulsa to keep the best players from the previous season.
However, a 16th place finish in the Western Conference and just eight wins in a 34-match season is not anywhere close to where we want to be from a competition standpoint. We are focused this offseason on improving the roster and bringing in players who can help us compete for a playoff spot and a place in the USL Championship Final.
Over the next few weeks, you will see more player announcements as we unveil our roster for 2020. Make sure you are following the club on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook so you don’t miss one piece of news!
What’s the plan to engage with the community at non-FC Tulsa events? E.g. Tulsa Tough, Mayfest, Ironman, etc.? – Nathan
Hey Nathan, great question! Being out in the community is crucial to building our fanbase. We want to be more than just a team that interacts with its fans on matchdays. Our players, coaches and staff should be a part of Tulsa, and that means being at big events like you have described.
We will be a community-first and fan-first club. Whether it's players signing autographs or staff handing out goodies, you can expect FC Tulsa to be an integral part at big city-wide events.
Is there plans for a soccer specific stadium in the future? – Hector
Hector, you aren’t the only one to ask about a stadium, and we suspect many are curious. In short, yes. Our owners, the Craft brothers, are actively working on a plan for a soccer specific stadium in Tulsa. We believe soccer should be played in a soccer specific stadium, and the Crafts share the fans hunger for a stadium FC Tulsa can call home.
Any chance you’ll be selling gear online? How about jerseys with players names? – Nina
Hello Nina! Our new FC Tulsa merchandise is going to be awesome, and we can’t wait to get it on sale to our fans. We don’t have an exact date on when merchandise will be available online, but we will have an online shop where fans can purchase the latest merch.
To your second question, while we haven’t debuted our new 2020 jerseys yet (fans can eagerly anticipate that announcement this offseason), we are excited to be able to provide customization on jerseys when they go on sale, whether that is a personal name and number or that of one of our players.
Any chance of outside friendlies? Would love to see a “Tulsa Cup” with [Tulsa] Athletic. – David
David, the USL Championship season is a long one with 34 matches spread out over eight months. It’s a grind for players and coaches. However, it is important in preseason to play friendlies against a variety of teams to get up to match fitness. In the past, FC Tulsa has played area colleges as well as other USL Championship clubs to build towards the first regular season match.
While no match against Tulsa Athletic is currently on the books, we are always exploring ways to be creative and draw more local fans while growing the professional game.
Don’t forget about the U.S. Open Cup which will run concurrently with the USL Championship regular season. FC Tulsa will enter the tournament in the second round and a win in that match could pit FC Tulsa against an MLS opponent in the third round. Might a match with Sporting KC or FC Dallas be in the cards? We'll have to wait and see!
Thanks again for all the questions submitted. Enjoy the weekend!
