Today, U.S. Soccer announced the pairings for the Second Round of the 107th Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. FC Tulsa enters the tournament at this stage, and the club will play the winner of Tulsa Athletic and Fort Worth Vaqueros FC. The match will be played at 7 p.m. on April 8 at Hurricane Track & Soccer Stadium on the campus of the University of Tulsa. Ticket information will be available at a later date.
“Every year, the U.S. Open Cup seems to bring some of the most exciting moments in soccer in our country,” said FC Tulsa head coach Michael Nsien. “Everyone looks forward to the matchups that cross the various leagues. It seems like there’s always some magical run from an underdog and that’s the beauty of this tournament. We look forward to having another opportunity to showcase what FC Tulsa is about and represent the club very well in this prestigious tournament.”
There have been some changes to the cup’s format this season, most remarkably with regards to scheduling and pairing. This season, Second Round matches will be played between April 7-9, while previously the First Round hasn’t started until early May with the Second Round being played the next week. This earlier start will allow for more rest for clubs in between matches, as well as for the competition to last longer in the calendar year.
Also new to this season’s U.S. Open Cup is a rule that states USL Championship clubs will be paired with either a Round One winner (such as FC Tulsa’s pairing) or a Division III Club (NISA and USL League One). This change is notable for Tulsa because of last year’s Second Round pairing, which matched Tulsa Roughnecks FC with fellow USL Championship side Austin Bold FC.
About the Opposition
Tulsa Athletic, founded in 2013, plays in U.S. Soccer’s fourth tier, the NPSL. 2020 will be the club’s fourth appearance in the Open Cup, having qualified for the 2020 U.S. Open Cup after finishing as one of the final eight teams in the 2019 NPSL Playoffs. Tulsa Athletic has been knocked out of the Open Cup in its first match in 2014, 2015, and 2017.
Fort Worth Vaqueros FC qualified for the Open Cup thanks to a third-place conference finish in the 2019 NPSL regular season. That finish was good enough to earn a playoff spot where the Vaqueros fell to Tulsa Athletic 3-1. This will be the second time Vaqueros have played in the U.S. Open Cup, after its debut in 2018.
FC Tulsa fans wanting to see their prospective Second Round opponents play in the First Round will be able to watch the match on March 24 at Case Soccer Complex on the campus of Oral Roberts University.
