Another window of 2022 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers means another chance for Joaquín Rivas to shine on the international stage for El Salvador. The FC Tulsa forward has been selected to represent “La Selecta” once again for the third time in as many qualifying windows as El Salvador’s aspires to cement a spot in Qatar.
The Salvadorian squad currently sits in seventh out of the eight nations battling in the CONCACAF Octagonal with five points, two points ahead of last-place Honduras. Sitting at a record of 1W-3L-2D and having scored just twice in six matches, “La Selecta” is hoping to see a surge of offense in its two November matchups, and Rivas would love to be the guy to make it happen.
Rivas’ next appearance for his home country will mark his 21st time he takes this pitch wearing the blue and white of El Salvador. He has four career international goals and three assists, including assisting his nation’s most recent goal in which he set up teammate Jairo Henríquez who buried a shot in the bottom left corner from outside the box.
Rivas had been in scorching form for FC Tulsa in the final three weeks of the season, finding the back of the net twice (including a missile from 20 yards out in FC Tulsa’s playoff match) and registering two assists as well. El Salvador will be counting on Rivas maintaining that same form as it takes on Jamaica at home tonight and then Panama in Panama City on Tuesday night.
