TULSA – It’s Derby Day in Tulsa, Oklahoma. FC Tulsa will make its way 14 miles southeast to Athletic Community Field at Hicks Park as the visiting side to take on hosts Tulsa Athletic in the Second Round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. The match marks the second-ever Tulsa Derby in the history of either franchise.
The first Derby took place a year ago at ONEOK Field, an affair that ended 2-1 in favor of FC Tulsa. The victory propelled FC Tulsa into the Third Round of the Open Cup where it matched up with MLS’ FC Dallas down in Frisco. Ultimately, FC Tulsa was eliminated from the tournament by Paul Arriola, Franco Jara, former Tulsa Roughneck Jesus Ferreira, and the rest of the Dallas squad for the second time in club history.
The furthest FC Tulsa has ever progressed in the Open Cup was the Fourth Round in 2017, the other occasion in which it clashed with FC Dallas. Overall, FC Tulsa has reached the Third Round or later four times since 2015, and a win over Tulsa Athletic tonight would make it five.
Tulsa Athletic, the city’s semi-professional National Premier Soccer League, enters tonight’s contest fresh off a 1-0 win over Brazos Valley Cavalry FC in the First Round of the Open Cup. In NPSL play, Athletic secured its third first-place Conference finish in four years in 2022. The year prior, Tulsa Athletic reached the NPSL National Championship in 2021, but fell to Denton Diablos FC by a 5-2 scoreline.
The Tulsa Derby kicks off from Hicks Park at 7 p.m. CT
