Forward Madison will mark its name in Wisconsin soccer history Tuesday night at 7 p.m., hosting Major League Soccer club Minnesota United in a special exhibition game at Breese Stevens Field. This will be the first time an MLS team has played in Wisconsin in 14 years, and the first time ever that an MLS team has visited Madison.
According to Forward Madison Managing Director Peter Wilt, the exhibition will be one of the marquee events of the FMFC’s inaugural season.
“This match will be the highlight of the summer for many of our fans,” Wilt said. “The chance to see a Major League Soccer team play in Madison is extremely exciting.”
Tuesday’s exhibition represents just one aspect of a partnership between Forward Madison and Minnesota United, which the two clubs announced in December. The Flamingos have also received several Loons on loan from Minnesota, and the teams are sharing scouting and technical resources.
FMFC’s roster should be at full strength for the game, with midfielder Danny Tenorio having made his full return to the team during Saturday’s 4-1 victory over North Texas SC. With an important USL League One game coming up on Friday in Toronto, Head Coach Daryl Shore will likely look to tap into the depth of his squad, giving some players chances who haven’t come by lots of minutes so far.
Minnesota United, meanwhile, is coming off consecutive wins in the U.S. Open Cup. The Loons advanced to the quarterfinal last Tuesday when Mason Toye (who has played seven games for Madison this year on loan) scored the winning goal in the final minutes to beat Houston Dynamo 3-2.
Interestingly, Forward Madison and Minnesota United are connected by more than just their partnership: FMFC Managing Director Peter Wilt was the former General Manager of the Minnesota Thunder, and both MNUFC Sporting Director Manny Lagos and coach Amos Magee played for him while he was there; Flamingo players Connor Tobin and J.C. Banks are both former Loons, as is assistant coach Neil Hlavaty; Jiro Barriga Toyama was on trial for Minnesota this preseason; and Christian “Pato” Díaz came to the attention of FMFC’s coaching staff from the recommendation of MNUFC star Miguel Ibarra.
Fans who arrive early on Tuesday may have the chance to buy a “Battle of the Birds” split scarf, which has drawn big buzz online. FMFC sold 100 scarves last week, with 150 more set to go on sale when “Flamboyance,” the stadium store at Breese Stevens Field, opens at noon on Tuesday (limit one scarf per ticket).
Following Tuesday’s exhibition, Forward Madison will begin a three-game road stretch in USL League One with a match against Toronto FC II on Friday, June 28 at 3 p.m. The ‘Mingos are just four points out of playoff position, and will be looking to continue a two-game winning run.
Forward Madison FC’s inaugural season is here! The team will play its next home game on June 25 vs Minnesota United FC. Get tickets to see Forward Madison’s inaugural season at: https://sportsengine-staging.go-vip.net/forwardmadisonfc/tickets.
