Forward Madison FC faces a major test this Friday, as it travels north of the border to take on Toronto FC II in USL League One play (3 p.m. CT; ESPN+). The Flamingos are in the midst of a mid-season turnaround, but must deal with short rest and a fearsome opponent far away from the comforts of Breese Stevens Field.
Although FMFC has won two games in a row and climbed up to seventh place, the team remains four points away from playoff position, which Toronto currently resides in. The Young Reds have not lost any of the home matches they have played thus far, and the ‘Mingos will need to break that streak in order to move any closer to them.
The Flamingos triumphed 3-1 over Toronto FC II back in May, but according to Head Coach Daryl Shore, his team knows it’s in for a different kind of challenge this time.
“They’re good at home,” Shore said. “We’ve got to make sure that we’re ready to play. We know that they’re going to be looking to exact revenge after we beat them at home, but I think it’s one of those where we’ve got to just keep pushing the games and try to get a result out of it.”
Forward Madison comes into Friday’s game without much time off, having just hosted Minnesota United FC in a major exhibition match on Tuesday. Lack of rest was a problem that plagued the Flamingos during their four-game losing streak in May, but Shore sought to be consciencious this week, letting several players (including J.C. Banks, Don Smart, Brian Sylvestre and Connor Tobin) take the midweek game off.
Toronto FC II, meanwhile, had been on a five-match unbeaten run before losing away to Lansing Ignite FC last Wednesday. The Young Reds will likely be without star player Jacob Shaffelburg, whom Toronto FC signed to its senior team last week. Shaffelburg made his MLS debut Wednesday, recording an assist in TFC’s 3-2 win over Atlanta United FC.
Forward Madison and The Flock are hosting an official watch party for Friday afternoon’s game at Avenue Club near Breese Stevens Field, which coincides with the U.S. Women’s National Team’s quarterfinal game against France in the FIFA World Cup.
Following its match in Toronto, Forward Madison will wait eight days before returning to USL League One action away to second-place South Georgia Tormenta FC on July 6.
Forward Madison FC’s inaugural season is here! The team will play its next home game on July 13 vs Chattanooga Red Wolves SC. Get tickets to see Forward Madison’s inaugural season at: https://sportsengine-staging.go-vip.net/forwardmadisonfc/tickets.
