Forward Madison FC is looking for revenge on Saturday as it hosts the Richmond Kickers at Breese Stevens Field at 7 p.m. for the second time in two weeks. Although the Flamingos fell 1-0 when the two teams met on Aug. 10, this weekend presents an opportunity to get even and take a major step toward the USL League One playoffs.
With seven games left in its inaugural season, Forward Madison finds itself just three points out of playoff position in the League One standings. The ‘Mingos have shifted up and down throughout the course of the year, but come into Saturday knowing a victory would guarantee them the third-place spot heading into the final weeks of the campaign.
According to Head Coach Daryl Shore, his team needs to take advantage of every game it still has at Breese Stevens Field, where the home crowd tops League One with over 4,200 fans in attendance per match.
“Our guys know we’ve got four games at home,” Shore said. “If we take care of business at home, then [we will make] the playoffs.”
FMFC enters the game with a relatively fresh squad, having let some senior players rest during scrimmages against Northern Illinois University and UW-Madison during the week. Midfielder Brandon Eaton is now in the latter stages of his recovery from a knee sprain sustained during Forward Madison’s match in Lansing on July 9, and has progressed to running without a brace.
The Flamingos turned in a positive result last weekend, holding in-form Greenville Triumph to a scoreless 0-0 draw in South Carolina, which Shore said has lifted the energy in the locker room.
“The mood’s been great,” Shore said. “We went to a tough place against the hottest team in our league and held them scoreless and got a good point on the road.”
In particular, Shore said the Flamingos have been boosted by the recent performances of winger Don Smart, who has scored a team-leading seven goals this year.
“Don’s a big part of or group,” Shore said. “You could almost argue that as Don goes, the Flamingos go. When he’s in his form and when he’s creating chances and everything, we usually have a good chance to win the game.”
The Richmond Kickers, meanwhile, are in ninth place, but are undefeated in their last four games, including the win over Forward Madison. The Kickers drew 2-2 with Toronto FC II last weekend. Wahab Ackwei and Matt Bolduc, who have combined for 30 starts this year, have both picked up suspensions due to yellow card accumulation and will be unavailable in Madison.
Forward Madison is pushing Saturday’s game as 90’s Night, a promotion suggested by the supporters themselves. Fans can by a 90’s Pack (FMFC windbreaker and Lunchable) or 90’s Meal (Budweiser and pink mac n’ cheese) for the game.
Following its match Saturday against Richmond, Forward Madison will return home to host its only midweek regular season game of the year against Greenville Triumph on Wednesday, Aug. 28. For now, though, the Flamingos have all their focus on this weekend.
“All the concentration is on Richmond,” Shore said. “We know that this is a big game.”
