Forward Madison will head home with work to do after falling to a 1-0 defeat against the Richmond Kickers on Saturday. Emiliano Terzaghi’s ninth-minute goal made the difference, with the Flamingos unable to find an equalizer as Richmond packed numbers behind the ball.
The result means that Richmond will take home the Henny Derby, a rivalry created by Black supporters of each club who exchange a golden bottle of Hennessy depending on the victor.
The Kickers got on the board early thanks to new striker Terzaghi, who opened the scoring in the ninth minute of the game. Terzaghi had his back to goal, but swirled around to shoot past goalkeeper Philipp Marceta into the far post.
Forward Madison winger Jamael Cox got on the end of a good chance in the 33rd minute, but his shot was pushed away by Richmond goalkeeper Akira Fitzgerald.
The Flamingos nearly tied it in the 92nd minute after midfielder Brandon Eaton poked a ball towards the net in the midst of a goalmouth scramble. The ball bounced above the goal line, but defender Scott Thomsen cleared it away at the final moment.
Both Cox and Allan Rodriguez made their first-ever starts for Forward Madison during Saturday’s game. Rodriguez, who is on loan from the Chicago Fire, was making his first professional appearance.
Following Saturday’s defeat, Forward Madison now sits ninth in USL League One. The Flamingos will return home to Hart Park for a matchup with South Georgia Tormenta FC on Friday, August 14 at 7 p.m. CT.
