Fresno native goalkeeper joins Fuego FC
FRESNO, Calif. – Central Valley Fuego FC announced on Sunday it has signed veteran goalkeeper Matias Fernandez as the club builds its roster for its inaugural 2022 USL League One season. The signing is pending league and federation approval.
Raised in Fresno, with an Argentine and Colombian background Fernandez most recently played with Valley 559 FC UPSL and Fresno FC of USL Championship in 2019. He also competed with Fresno Fuego of USL League Two between 2014 through 2018.
“Having been part of Fresno Fuego meant something very important in my sports career and especially in my personal life. Alongside the players, coaching staff and the Central Valley community, we were able to experience the incomparable feeling of passion, unity and family! Those were times of learning, training, and fundamental commitment, which today allows me to have the necessary experience to be able to contribute 100% of my abilities to Fuego FC,” said Fernandez. “I have full confidence in each one of my teammates, and I am proud to know that we are in the hands of a professional group of coaching staff, headed by our admired and respected Head Coach Jaime Ramirez, Milton Blanco, Eddie Gonzalez and Hugo Caballero, who without doubt will make this new project the realization of our dream…to have Professional Football again in our Central Valley. Collegiately, Fernandez played with Fresno Pacific University, where he joined Coach Jaime Ramirez for two seasons. Before transferring, he also competed with Monterey Bay University. In 2014 he played for Fresno City CollegeFresno City College and was captain and named Goalkeeper of the Year.
“This is his second professional team. I got to work with him in the last year of Fresno Fuego PDL!” said Caballero, “Guy is always working hard, always putting the time in training.”
