Greenville, SC – The Greenville Triumph suffered its first defeat at home on the 2021 season after losing 3-2 to Tormenta FC on Saturday night. The Triumph put forth a valiant effort, scoring the first two goals of the match before the Upstate club conceded an unanswered three to the South Georgia side.
There was much more action for Greenville in the final third compared to last weekend’s home match, as the team set up in a 3-5-2 with Tyler Polak and Abdi Mohamed playing as the wingbacks. Greenville struck first in the 38′ on a Brandon Fricke goal inside the six-yard box. Fricke was in the right place at the right time as Aaron Walker’s shot on goal deflected to the right wing and allowed Mohamed to serve a dangerous ball in traffic.
Walker was tremendous all night, recording his first goal on the season in the opening three minutes of the first half. It was a well-struck, first-time cleanup from the top of the 18-yard-box after winger Allen Gavilanes went 1v1 down the left side.
Tormenta ended the Triumph’s clean sheet hopes in the 62′ when Marco Micaletto scored his sixth on the season. His delayed run to the top of the box ended in a first-time finish to the near post and a 2-1 game with time to play. Moments later, Tormenta earned a free kick from distance. Mayr-Falten, proven to be problematic on the set piece, delivered once again for Tormenta as he sent a perfectly placed shot to the near post to tie things 2-2.
With ten minutes left to play in the match, Tormenta found space down the right side with a retreating Greenville backline. A pinpoint delivery slotted behind the Triumph defense found an open Stefan Mueller, who trickled the game-winner past a diving Dallas Jaye. Greenville continued to push and found several near miss opportunities through the final minutes but failed to find the back of the net for a third time.
Tormenta now leads the 2021 series 1-2-0, with the teams set to meet once more on August 7 at Triumph Stadium. Greenville will face Chattanooga on Saturday, July 14 at CHI Memorial Stadium. It will mark the first time the two sides have met this season.
