WHAT TO WATCH FOR
The Greenville Triumph Soccer Club begins its first Open Cup run in two years this Thursday at Legacy Early College as they host the USL Champion League club, Oakland Roots SC in the second round. After falling to expansion team, Fuego FC in their USL League One Home Opener, the team hopes to make a comeback and progress to the third round of the oldest ongoing national soccer competition in the United States.
The 2-0 loss to Central Valley Fuego FC came as a surprise to most League One followers, many of whom predicted in favor of the three-time League One Finalist. What looked to be a strong start for the Triumph ultimately ended in defeat when they could not capitalize on early scoring opportunities. Poor defensive shape and marking led to a first Fuego goal midway through the second half, and a misstep by Paul Christensen left Fuego with an easy second shot 10 minutes later. Fuego sealed the match 2-0 to win their inaugural contest.
The Greenville Triumph last played Open Cup in 2019, defeating League One rival South Georgia Tormenta FC 1-0 on Cole Seiler’s late-match heroics. Greenville hosted the Charleston Battery in the following round, holding the advantage for much of the match before conceding a match-winning goal to Charleston in the 89th minute.
Oakland Roots SC had a strong showing this winter, going 6-0 during their preseason schedule including matchups against the MLS San Jose Earthquakes, Championship member FC Tulsa, Greenville’s most recent opponent, Central Valley Fuego FC and fellow League One Club, FC Tucson. Despite early success in preseason, The Roots have struggled within their first five matches of regular season play, losing three and drawing two. They currently sit 12th in the USL Championship’s Western Conference, and are on the hunt for three points after a set unlucky results.
It’s clear Oakland Roots was able to achieve the result Greenville had wished for against Fuego FC nearly a month ago. Just four short days after their loss, Greenville will look to tidy up those mistakes and find the back of the net sooner rather than later, upon Thursday’s match.
