Fulltime Recap – Indy Eleven 2 : 2 New York Cosmos
INDIANAPOLIS (Saturday, August 30, 2014) – After dropping several points at home late in matches, Indy Eleven flipped the script tonight against the New York Cosmos, as forward Jermaine Johnson’s 93rd minute equalizer gave the Indiana side a point from a 2-2 draw with the defending NASL champion in front of a sellout crowd of 10,659 at IUPUI’s Carroll Stadium. Johnson’s first goal with Indy Eleven capped the home side’s rally back from a two-goal deficit with a half hour to play after the Cosmos capitalized on a pair of chances to go up 2-0 into the halftime break.
The Cosmos would waste little time getting on the board, as the visitors went up 1-0 through midfielder David Diosa on the stroke of the 6th minute. With ample space on the right flank, midfiedler Andres Flores was able to pick out Diosa’s ghosting run through the box, and he’d rise with little resistance to nod the effort to the far post to move the scoreboard early.
New York would continue to have the better of the chances through the first 20 minutes, with midfielder Danny Mwanga featuring prominently for his new side. While the Eleven would gain more of a foothold over the final 20 minutes of the half, it was Mwanga helping New York double their lead just before the break, as he held off two defenders on a break upfield just long enough to bring Mads Stokkelien into the play. The Norweigian striker made no mistake with a blistering first-time shot past Eleven netminder Kristian Nicht to take the air out of Carroll Stadium and give New York a 2-0 lead.
Indy Eleven would exit the locker room with renewed energy, and the increased workrate would pay off in the 61st minute with Mike Ambersley’s sixth goal of the season. After nearly losing the ball on a counter attack on the right side, midfielder Victor Pineda would regain his touch and fire off a low cross from the right endline that eluded Cosmos goalkeeper Kyle Zobeck and left an oncoming Ambersley with the easiest of finishes on the doorstep, slicing the Cosmos advantage to 2-1.
The affair would get choppy – and chippy – at times, and New York had its fair share of chances to put the game out of reach late, most notable when midfielder Joseph Nane saw one shot from the top of the six saved by Nicht before pushing the rebounded attempt wide right. That left the door open for Johnson’s late equalizer, set up by a looping cross from the left side by midfielder Blake Smith. After gathering cleanly his first touch, Johnson chipped a shot from 25 yards over an onrushing Zobeck, who could only look back and watch the Jamaican’s finish even the proceedings at 2-2.
After salvaging a point in front of its 10th consecutive sellout crowd at Carroll Stadium, Indy Eleven (2-5-2, 8 pts. in Fall Season; 2-10-6, 12 pts. overall) will take to the road for the next round of NASL Fall Season play next Saturday, September 6, when it heads south to take on the Atlanta Silverbacks (3-3-2, 11 pts. in Fall Season; 6-8-3, 21 pts. overall). Kickoff from Silverbacks Park in Atlanta is set for 7:30 p.m. for a contest that fans can follow live via the NASLLive.com streaming video package or at one of several Indy Eleven Watch Parties held at establishments across the Hoosier State – visit www.indyeleven.com for more details on those locations.
Indy Eleven Head Coach Juergen Sommer
“We’re really pleased with the result and the effort from our players. At halftime, we had a lot to talk about, and we came out with nothing to lose. We knew we needed to keep the crowd in it and play with energy, and once [Mike] Ambersley scored, we really felt that we could get the equalizer.”
New York Cosmos Head Coach Giovanni Savarese
“We need to do a better job of maintaining the lead, but give credit to Indy because they made it difficult for us. We created some chances at the end and we could have capitalized and finished the game off, but we didn’t get the job done.”
