Indy Eleven Draws University of Dayton 1-1 in Preseason Matinee
Eleven Midfielder Dylan Mares Tallies in Third Straight Game to Start Exhibition Schedule
INDIANAPOLIS (Sunday, March 15, 2015) – Indy Eleven midfielder Dylan Mares scored for the third time in as many preseason contests, but his tally this afternoon against the University of Dayton was only enough to secure a 1-1 draw in exhibition play at IUPUI’s Michael A. Carroll Stadium.
Mares’ score would put Indy Eleven up in the seventh minute of play. The visiting Flyers would even up from the penalty spot in the 70th minute. Â
Indy Eleven would control possession early and often, hitting the back of the net in the early going through the red-hot Mares. The chance started with midfielder Victor Pineda carrying into the left side of the penalty area and centering for midfielder Don Smart, whose far post shot turned into a cross. Mares intercepted the ball and redirected at the doorstep to put Indy Eleven up 1-0 early.
Smart nearly got one of his own in the 22nd minute, but his effort from 10 yards out was batted away by the Flyers’ goalkeeper before it could find the upper right corner of goal. It was Pineda who was in the mix twice to double the lead around the half hour mark, but the Dayton ‘keeper held onto a 50-50 ball that Pineda had a vicious swipe before Pineda would set up a free kick by being fouled just outside the Flyers area.
Trialist Duke Lacroix would make some good impressions on his final day in Indy Eleven camp, nearly snapping home a header in the 35th minute before his 1-2 with fellow striker Wojciech Wojcik put the Polish forward in on goal in the 41st minute, only to see the ensuing shot by the Polish striker blocked out for a corner.
Wojcik nearly got things off to a bright start in the second half for Indy Eleven, but his header in the 46th minute was caught on the line by the Dayton ‘keeper. Two minutes later it was midfielder Kyle Hyland latching onto one from 25 yards out, but again the shot was saved.
Mares would nearly get his second of the game in the 68th minute, but his shot from outside the area smacked off the underside of the crossbar, and Smart was unable to finish the rebound. The next trip down the field for Dayton would see a ball elude three Indy Eleven players and bounce near goalkeeper Jon Dawson, who collided with a Flyers attacker to set up a penalty kick. The spot kick was finished well, low and inside the right post, to square things up at 1-1.
Indy Eleven midfielder Kleberson entered for his first spring exhibition action in the 70th minute, and he nearly hit home on a 20-yard free kick in the 73rd minute, only to see the Flyers goalkeeper swat away the ball at the upper right 90. Kleberson had a couple more tries from distance go wanting down the stretch and the teams would see the match end even with no stoppage time played.
Today’s draw kept Indy Eleven’s preseason record at the .500 mark, now 1-1-1 with two games remaining before its 2015 NASL Spring Season opener on April 4 at the Atlanta Silverbacks.
Indy Eleven will continue its preseason schedule on Saturday, March 21, with another closed-door scrimmage, this time against USL newcomer Louisville City FC. Due to facility restrictions, Indy Eleven’s preseason games will be closed to the public, however, fans will be able to follow game action throughout the spring live via the team’s @IndyElevenLive Twitter feed.
