Racing Towards the Starting Line
This Saturday at 11:00 a.m, “Indiana’s Team” will host former NASL frenemies Jacksonville Armada at the University of Indianapolis in the first of two preseason friendlies scheduled for the day.
This weekend also kicks off the official start of the 2018 USL regular season; 28 teams will take to the pitch in 14 matches taking place over a three-day span.
Although Indy Eleven won’t see any regular season action during the opening weekend, the “Boys in Blue” will make the most of their time preparing for their USL debut on March 24th when they hit the road to take on the Richmond Kickers.
Last Sunday, Indy Eleven capped their two-game road trip with a 2-0 win against Chicago Fire at Toyota Park in an early morning scrimmage. First half goals from “New in Blue” forwards Soony Saad and Eugene Starikov saw Indy register another preseason win, bringing their record to 3W-1D-1L. The day prior, Indy went toe-to-toe with developmental side Bridges FC which saw the day conclude in a scoreless draw. At the moment, Starikov leads Indy’s scoring charge after notching three goals in the last four matches. Saad follows close behind with two goals and forward Jack McInerney in tow with a single goal finding the back of the net.
Jacksonville Armada is no stranger to Indy Eleven. Both teams competed against each other the last three seasons during both club’s stay in the NASL. In that time, Indy accumulated a 3W-5D-3L regular season record against the former River City rivals. However, only five familiar faces (MF J.C. Banks, DF Drew Beckie, FW Derek Gebhard, FW Ciaran Kilduff and DF Kalen Ryden) return to the northern Florida club as the Armada look to compete in the NPSL for the 2018 Season. Additionally, former Puerto Rico mainstays Yuma and Connor Doyle will lineup for Jacksonville this year.
Despite the lack of a full-time starting XI in preseason, the Armada has compiled a 2W-0D-1L record thus far. In their last match, the Armada cruised away 3-0 in the franchise’s first win over the University of Northern Florida. A brace from trialist Comillo Portilla and a goal from returning midfielder Banks saw Jacksonville claim their second consecutive win of 2018.
You can catch the action tomorrow at 11:00 a.m. at the University of Indianapolis. The match is a non-ticketed event at an open facility. Can’t make it out? Keep up with all of the action on Twitter by following @IndyElevenLive.
"Indiana's Team" will kickoff their second preseason of the day against Indiana Wesleyan University at 1:30 p.m. at the University of Indianapolis. There will not be any live or post-game coverage of this match, but this event is also non-ticketed and open to the public.
